Welcome to June's issue of Go Higher West Yorkshire's (GHWY) Care to Go Higher newsletter.

This month we promote a range of exciting opportunities for your young people. These include the chance to talk about the importance of care-experience in the general election, and an internship opportunity in the civil service.

We would also like to congratulate all the care-experienced and estranged students who will be graduating from the University of Huddersfield next month. All of its care-experienced and estranged students receive a bursary to support the cost of the graduation. Staff are also on hand to support students and celebrate with them to ensure they get the best possible experience on the day.

Please get in touch with Susan Darlington if you would like to share any news stories, resources or upcoming events from your organisation.

Learn from Care to Go Higher

We have been running our innovative Care to Go Higher CPD programme for the key influencers of care-experienced young people since 2019. In this series of articles, we share some of the information from it that focuses on educational support.

Why support care-experienced students into HE?

For the past few months, we have been considering some of the challenges facing care-experienced students or things they should keep in mind when making decisions about HE. These can be found here

These have been valuable topics but one thing we have not covered is some of the evidence around care-experienced students and HE. That is what we look at this month.

Upcoming CPD opportunities

Many care-experienced students also have additional support needs, such as a disability or being from a minority ethnicity. These free sessions provide a broader understanding of these lived experiences and ways in which to engage with young people.

Self-paced learning

We offer a range of opportunities to upskill and build confidence for individuals who support young people with their educational progression.

Our opportunities align with the academic year, covering topics such as preparing students for admissions interviews, equipping them with current knowledge on apprenticeships, clearing and student finance.

We also offer sessions that focus on personal and professional development, such as mentoring skills and presentation skills.

Next government faces persistent education inequalities

The Institute for Fiscal Studies has warned that the next government will inherit a series of challenges facing schools, including ‘persistent’ education inequalities, higher pupil absences and growing mental health difficulties. It said while England is one of the top performers in international assessments of reading and maths, the gap between the most and least-disadvantaged fifth of 15-year-olds is now equivalent to the gap between the average in England and the average in Colombia.
