RE syllabus – updates from Oak |

Welcome back to school! I’m sure it must seem like a shock after a sunny summer holiday.
We’ve been working to develop support for the local RE syllabus, in particular to show how the excellent Oak Academy materials can be used to bring a new edge to the way we teach.
We have put together a spreadsheet to map Oak resources onto the Devon/Torbay/Plymouth/ Cornwall syllabus, accessible here. KS1 and 2 are complete. KS3 will be put up by 18 September.
KS2 example: If you teach ‘How do festivals and worship show what matters to a Muslim?’ (Lower KS2.9) the unit asks pupils to examine Muslim belief in God and Ibadah or worship. The Oak unit How does prayer and fasting help Muslims find harmony? can help teachers fulfil nearly all the learning outcomes for this unit.
It offers case studies of prayer and fasting in different Muslim families and ways different Muslims mark Ramadan and celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
Teachers could use these to help sequence and enrich their curriculum.

Over the summer, the Secretary of State for Education announced that there will be a public consultation on the future content of the national curriculum – including Religious Education. This will be launched in September, so please watch out for the news and contribute your ideas where you can.

| Pilgrimage
Over recent years the BBC’s Pilgrimage programmes have been very well received. If you have watched any of them you will know how rich they are in dialogue and conversation between people with diverse religious and non-religious worldviews. NATRE has worked with the programme’s production team to create a great set of classroom resources.

| Halloween and witches
Halloween coincides with the festival of Samhain, when Pagans celebrate the lives of those in their families who have died. The picture of witches with broomsticks stands at odds with contemporary Pagan witchcraft, where the earth is venerated and ancestors celebrated. Similarly, the idea that Pagans worship the devil is a complete misunderstanding. |

The Guardian has reported that one mosque is attacked in Britain every five days, according to new data monitoring anti-Muslim hatred.
Educate Against Islamophobia has produced some useful resources on Islamophobia. |
| Invitation: Hindu RE Teachers
Are you a primary or secondary RE teacher who identifies as Hindu? A PhD study at the University of Cumbria is exploring the experiences and perspectives of Hindu educators in RE. Participants are invited to take part in two focus groups and an individual interview.

Katie Taylor is a devout Christian. She also happens to be the three-times, undisputed world boxing champion. She ended her illustrious career recently at Croke Park, where they gave one of Ireland's greatest sporting figures the grandest of farewells on a night of celebration, spectacle and music. Katie walked out at Croke Park to the anthem: ‘All Hail the Power of Jesus’.
