As autumn moves towards winter, as the leaves fall and the colder nights draw in, we are reminded of the constant change of the seasons. In his recent book, ‘A Death in the Parish’, Rvd Revd Richard Coles writes:
‘All things are in a state of flux ... – Heraclitus, remembered from his first philosophy lectures. He now thought Heraclitus had missed something, that the person stepping into the flowing river is also a flowing river; there is no coherent self, no fixedness from which to observe and judge. We too are in states of perpetual change, and no matter how diligent we are at mowing the lawn, clipping the borders … disorder increases because we are caught in the inescapable dynamics of life and existence.’ (P216)
One of the important features of the new Religion and Worldviews approach, which underpins the new RE syllabus, is the significance of seeing religions not as fixed, unchanging entities, but as evolving and changing communities. Buddhism teaches that everything is in a state of flux, including us as humans, but, as we can see from the quote above, the parish priest remembers this idea from his Greek philosophy classes. |
