Welcome to October's issue of Go Higher West Yorkshire's (GHWY) Care to Go Higher newsletter. 


In this issue we include a bumper crop of open days and activities that can help to introduce your young person to HE.


This month we say goodbye to Dominic House, our Care to Go Higher Delivery Officer. Many of you will have attended the CPD he delivered and so I am sure you will join the GHWY team in wishing him well in the future.

Care to Go Higher CPD programme awarded certification


We are pleased to announce that our Care to Go Higher programme has been awarded ‘certified’ status by CPD UK. 


The programme, which was launched in 2019, gives the key influencers of care-experienced individuals the tools they need to support informed decision making in relation to HE.


By completing a CPD certified course, employees can be sure in the quality and robustness of the learning content.

Lighting buildings blue for National Care Leavers' Week


National Care Leavers’ Week, which will run between 28 October and 3 November, celebrates care leavers and raises awareness of issues in the care system. The theme for this year is All of Us, We are One.


A number of GHWY's members, including Leeds Conservatoire and the University of Huddersfield, are lighting their buildings and cafes in blue to support and recognise their care leavers on 30 October as part of a national campaign.

From Us to Us: A collection of advice from care-experienced graduates to care-experienced graduates


'From Us to Us' is a booklet that contains advice from care-experienced graduates to care-experienced people who are approaching graduation, or have recently graduated themselves. 


The advice included throughout has been collected as part of the British Academy-funded Care-Experienced Graduates' Decision-Making, Choices and Destinations project.

Volunteer Peer Advisor vacancy


GIPSIL, a community based organisation that provides housing, counselling, advice and support to young and vulnerable people at risk in Leeds, is seeking to appoint a Volunteer Peer Advisor.


The successful applicant will help to deliver practical, emotional and issue-based wellbeing support to children and young people in Leeds. This includes but is not limited to those with care-experience.

Focus on national awareness campaigns

In this series of articles, we look at how national awareness campaigns can benefit care-experienced individuals and how you can get involved.

Helping care-experienced students to manage stress


Studying in HE can be rewarding but there are times it can be stressful. This can be compounded for care-experienced learners by their lack of family support. 


The theme for this year’s National Stress Awareness Day (6 November) is campaigning to reduce stress and improve wellbeing. This is something that you as a key influencer can help students with throughout their transition to and experience in HE. We take a look at some key wellbeing tips and advice.

Upcoming CPD opportunities

Many care-experienced students also have additional support needs, such as a disability or being from a minority ethnicity. These free sessions provide a broader understanding of these lived experiences and ways in which to engage with young people.

Self-paced learning


We offer a range of opportunities to upskill and build confidence for individuals who support young people with their educational progression. 


Our opportunities align with the academic year, covering topics such as preparing students for admissions interviews, equipping them with current knowledge on apprenticeships, clearing and student finance.


We also offer sessions that focus on personal and professional development, such as mentoring skills and presentation skills.

Upcoming Higher Education (HE) events

HE events can help young people to plan the next steps on their educational journey. They offer an opportunity to visit campuses, talk to staff and current students, and learn more about what courses are available. They are free, with in-person as well as online options usually available.

Mill Studios open event


When: Wednesday, 13 November between 4-6.30pm

Where: Calderdale College


If your young person is dreaming of a career in the creative industry, they would benefit from attending Calderdale College's open day to find out more about its brand-new E-sports, Games Design and TV & Film courses.


At the event they can explore state of the art facilities at the College's Dean Clough hub, demo its industry-standard gaming and film equipment, and apply for a course.

Where: University of Huddersfield


Visiting the University's campus is a great chance for your young person to talk to staff and current students. 


They will also be able to look at the facilities and see the place in action.

When: Saturday, 19 October between 9am-3pm

Where: University of Leeds


Open days are the best way for your young person to learn more about their course, explore the University's campus and find out more about student life at Leeds.


There will be the chance to attend subject specific talks as well as find out everything about accommodation, study abroad opportunities, career development and financial support.

When: Wednesday, 16 October between 4.30-7pm 

Where: University Centre Leeds


An opportunity for your young person to find out more about degree-level courses in Performing Arts, Creative Arts, Hair & Beauty, Law, Business, Events, Health & Social Care, Sports, Travel & Tourism, Engineering, Science, Digital, Education and more.


There will also be time to chat with staff, discover student support, and more.


Additional open days are available in the New Year.

Interview skills


When: Thursday, 7 November between 6-7.30pm 

Where: Online


The University of Bradford's interactive webinar will help your young person to prepare for a range of interview formats, how to prepare and what to expect on the day. 


The session is suitable for year 13 students or those studying an equivalent qualification (e.g. BTEC). 


It is part of the University's Progression Scheme Programme, which is open to those with care-experience.

When: Saturday, 9 November 

Where: Leeds Beckett University


Your young person will be able to visit the University's campuses and facilities, and talk to staff and students about their chosen courses.


Attending is a great way for your young person to find out more about the University, view accommodation facilities, and find out everything they need to know about student life.


Additional open days are available in November and December, as well as online.

Latest HE sector updates 

Huge rise in number of young care leavers facing homelessness


Government data shows that more than 4,000 young care leavers in England were facing homelessness by April 2024. This is a jump of 54% in five years.


The increase, which covers 18, 19 and 20-year-olds, is 15 times greater than the rise in homelessness among all young people in England.

Starmer promises to house all veterans, young care leavers and victims of domestic abuse


In his keynote address to the Labour Party Conference, Prime minister Sir Keir Starmer promised to house all veterans, young care leavers and victims of domestic abuse, and introduce a duty of candour law to parliament before April next year.
