Welcome to September's issue of Go Higher West Yorkshire's (GHWY) Care to Go Higher newsletter. We hope everyone had a good break over the summer.


In this issue we introduce a new regular feature that looks at how national awareness campaigns can benefit care-experienced individuals and how you can get involved.


If you have not already attended our acclaimed Care to Go Higher CPD programme, you might want to consider registering for our next course. Running between November and December, it will give you the tools you need to support your young person to make informed decision in relation to HE. Find out more.

Students Unions: a form of overlooked support for care-experienced students


We look at some of the ways in which Student Unions can offer informal support to care-experienced students, especially as they transition to HE.


They can be a great place to socialise without the expectation to spend money, find out about jobs that are advertised specifically for students, and receive free money advice and help.

Care leaver graduates praise support from University of Huddersfield


The University of Huddersfield has celebrated the success of care leaver and care experienced graduates who have been supported during their studies.


The students all received support from the University's wellbeing team. This offers guidance on financial help available to educational support, as well as friendly faces to turn to when the step up to university life becomes overwhelming.

Care Leaver Internship Scheme 2024


Care leavers who are aged between 18-30 are invited to apply for an internship with the Civil Service.


The roles are based across the country, and successful candidates will provide support to a government department for 12-months.


Tasks will vary depending on where the individual works and the grade to which they are assigned.

In conversation with NNECL's Executive Director: Working in the Civil Service


NNECL is hosting a conversation with its care experienced Executive Director, Denise Rawls, for anyone thinking of applying for the Civil Service's Care Leaver Internship.


Denise previously worked in the Civil Service, and she will share her experience of starting work, her career progression, learning and travel opportunities, and the different departments she worked in.

Focus on national awareness campaigns

In this series of articles, we look at how national awareness campaigns can benefit care-experienced individuals and how you can get involved.

Supporting care-experienced individuals during National Inclusion Week


National Inclusion Week aims to give organisations the opportunity to celebrate inclusion and place focus on their inclusion and diversity agendas. This includes considering the needs of care-experienced individuals. 


We look at some of the support that we offer, as well as an Employer Charter that benefits those with care experience.

Upcoming CPD opportunities

Many care-experienced students also have additional support needs, such as a disability or being from a minority ethnicity. These free sessions provide a broader understanding of these lived experiences and ways in which to engage with young people.

Self-paced learning


We offer a range of opportunities to upskill and build confidence for individuals who support young people with their educational progression. 


Our opportunities align with the academic year, covering topics such as preparing students for admissions interviews, equipping them with current knowledge on apprenticeships, clearing and student finance.


We also offer sessions that focus on personal and professional development, such as mentoring skills and presentation skills.

Upcoming Higher Education (HE) events

HE events can help young people to plan the next steps on their educational journey. They offer an opportunity to visit campuses, talk to staff and current students, and learn more about what courses are available. They are free, with in-person as well as online options usually available.

UCAS application support & Personal Statement session


When: Thursday, 26 September between 6-7.30pm 

Where: Online


This interactive workshop will advise Year 13 students who are interested in applying to the University of Bradford about the UCAS application process and how to complete a Personal Statement.


The session will also give details of its Progression Scheme, which supports undergraduate applicants whose circumstances mean they could be less likely to receive an offer based on standard entry criteria.

Manufacturing day open event


When: Thursday, 26 September between 3-5pm

Where: Calderdale College


In partnership with West Yorkshire Manufacturing Services and Make UK, Calderdale College will bring your young person an opportunity to open doors to a career in manufacturing.


The event will include the chance to see demonstrations from The Engineering Centre apprentices, and have a go at a whole host of activities, including 3D printing and Virtual Reality demos.

Open day


When: Saturday,12 October between 9am-3pm

Where: Leeds Beckett University


Your young person will be able to visit the University's campuses and facilities, and talk to staff and students about their chosen courses.


Attending is a great way for your young person to find out more about the University, view accommodation facilities, and find out everything they need to know about student life.


Additional open days are available in November and December.

Latest HE sector updates 

Children in care wait 10 years for permanent home


A new study has found that ore than one in 10 children in care were still in temporary placements a decade after entering the care system in Scotland.


The University of Stirling found that on average it took more than two years to find them a permanent home. Researchers also raised concerns that too many had no contact with their siblings.
