Care to Go Higher training delivered to virtual school staff
We recently partnered with Wakefield Virtual School to deliver bespoke training to virtual school staff and designated teachers.
The training session was adapted from our Care to Go Higher programme, which is aimed at the key influencers of care-experienced young people.
The session was framed within the local context. Statistics and information about care-experienced students highlighted the low progression to HE in the area when compared to other parts of the UK. |

Reflecting and collaborating at collaborative teachers’ and advisers’ conference
The diversity of HE across the region was recently showcased at a conference we organised with our 13 member institutions.
The event, which was held at the University of Huddersfield, was aimed at individuals who support young people to make informed choices about HE.
It included a number of break-out sessions that focused on a particular under-represented group. Among these was a session that looked at support offered to care-experienced individuals from HE providers. |

Estranged students added to NNECL Quality Mark guidance
Guidance for the NNECL Quality Mark is being adapted to include students who are estranged.
These students have always been a part of the Quality Mark narrative, but the move is being made to ensure the work the Stand Alone charity has achieved is not lost.
People can expect to see more resources being added to NNECL's website, articles relating to students who are estranged in its newsletters, and topics relating to the support of these students included in its webinar series. |

Students at risk of dropping out of HE due to worsening finances
According to a new survey, a third of UK students said they are at risk of dropping out of HE due to worsening finances. Over 2,000 students were polled in February and 58% of the respondents said their financial situation has worsened over the past year. As the cost-of-living crisis continues to hit students hard – with those from widening access backgrounds being disproportionately affected – there is an urgent need to identify how the HE sector can further alleviate students’ burdens. |
