Welcome to our STEM Opportunities newsletter for teachers, detailing upcoming events & information that may be of interest. 

Leeds Futures: STEM

The application deadline for Leeds Futures: STEM is fast approaching on 4th February. This sustained programme for Year 12 students interested in STEM aims to provide insight into the breadth of STEM subjects at Higher Education. With a mixture of online and in person sessions, students will learn subject specific information and gain skills that will help them transition to University.

Leeds Futures : Environment

The closing date for applications to Leeds Futures - Environment is fast approaching, 4th February. This Y12 programme combines online, and in-person taster talks and activities which highlight the breath of topics covered when studying environment at higher education. Participants will gain knowledge, develop insight, and discover the essential skills needed for an environment-based degree.

Physics and Astronomy Year 12 Work Experience Week: July 15-19, 2024, 10am to 4pm

Date: July 15-19, 2024

Time: 10am to 4pm each day

Applications are now open for Year 12s to learn what it’s like to work in an academic, research-based university through a series of workshops, lab sessions and a project where they will be working alongside other pupils with similar interests in physics and astronomy.

This is their chance to explore fascinating Physics topics, meet world-leading experts and get a taste of what life as a researcher is like.

The Work Experience Week is open to students currently in Year 12 and studying both Physics at A-level.  Applications will close at 23:59 on Sunday 24 March 2024.

Salters Festival of Chemistry Discovery Days
15th and 16th May 2024

Date: 15th& 16th May 2024

We are delighted to be hosting two Discovery Days for pupils in year 10 in the Yorkshire & Humber region. This is a fantastic opportunity for budding chemists to synthesise aspirin in our undergraduate labs and find out more about careers in chemistry.

Reach for the Sky 2024:  March – July 2024   

Location: (2 visits p/school) one workshop in school & one visit to the university  

For year 9 –11 physics, maths and/ DT students

Funded by the Reach for the Sky Challenge Fund 2023

By taking part in this programme your students will learn some of the key engineering principles underpinning the aviation industry, see advanced engineering facilities in operation, perform associated activities, and learn about the wide variety of careers available in the aviation industry.


This two-part programme includes a session in school by Dr David Peacock, Aviation Programme Lead, and Coker Oluwaseun, Education Outreach Fellow followed by a visit to the university.

This is their chance to explore fascinating Physics topics, meet world-leading experts and get a taste of what life as a researcher is like.

A-level Oscilloscope Practical Days

Date:

Schools can bring A-level Physics students to our First Year Teaching Labs to carry out practical experiments using an oscilloscope.
Students will experience life as an undergraduate physics student, exploring the campus and speaking to current staff and students in the School of Physics and Astronomy. They are offered free of charge and we can accommodate groups of up to 50 pupils.

To enable students to get an appreciation of studying a STEM subject at degree level we offer summer schools in Biological Sciences, Food Science & Nutrition and Mathematics.

Subject Knowledge for Physics Teaching (SKPT)

Location: Blended learning (in-person and online)

Subject Knowledge for Physics Teaching (SKPT) courses, delivered by The Ogden Trust, are FULLY FUNDED blended learning CPD for key stage 3 and key stage 4 teachers teaching physics without a physics specialism.

Insight2Uni – e-Mentoring Scheme

For black-heritage Year 12 students interested in Business-related university courses

Date: The programme runs from March – November 2024

Applications are now open for the Insight2Uni Mentoring Programme. This is a great opportunity for black-heritage year 12s who are interested in studying Business-related courses (including Economics) at university. Starting in March, the 10 month programme includes a visit to the University of Leeds and monthly online mentoring sessions with a black-heritage mentor.  Participants will benefit from personalised application support, hearing first hand about university life as a black-heritage student and being better prepared to start university.  87% of past mentees secure top university offers and the programme is formally recognised on UCAS applications.
