2023 in review - celebrating some of our successes from last year

image.

You may have seen on social media that we marked the 12 Days of Christmas, by looking back at some of the successes we’ve had in 2023. We think these successes deserve shouting about as we look back at the year.

Please watch the video and join us in celebrating these amazing achievements and the people who made them possible.

Full details about all of the stories highlighted in the video are available here.

Update to medical leadership

Message from Prof Adrian Harris, Chief Medical Officer

Dr Anthony Hemsley leaves us this week to begin a six month secondment to NHS Devon as Medical Director for Urgent and Emergency Care.

image.

We will miss Anthony hugely whilst he is away, but our loss is the Devon system’s gain.

We are pleased Anthony will have the opportunity to apply his wise and patient-centric leadership approach to Devon more widely – as well as his wicked sense of humour. We wish him the very best on his secondment.

During Anthony's absence, Dr Karen Davies will step into the role of Medical Director for Eastern Services, while Ms Cheryl Baldwick and Dr Gareth Moncaster will share the role of Medical Director for our Northern Services, from Monday 15 January. I am sure you will join me in wishing all three the very best in these roles.

If you have any queries as we go through this handover, please send them to the CMO office at rduh.cmooffice@nhs.net.

Holiday season and industrial action challenges – message from Execs

We wanted to take a moment to share our pride and gratitude for your incredible response to the significant challenges we faced over the holiday season and through the last round of industrial action. You rose to the challenge, respected each other’s decisions around industrial action and worked incredibly hard throughout the entire period to ensure our patients were cared for and safe.

Read the full message here to see the numbers behind the massive challenges we faced and the incredible success we achieved.

Infection prevention update - please follow IPC guidelines

We continue to see new cases of COVID-19, flu, other respiratory diseases and norovirus infections across our services.

Across our Eastern services we have now been able to move away from the blanket visitor restrictions we had applied and will be using these restrictions in certain areas on a case-by-case basis instead. You can find details here.

To protect yourselves, your patients and your colleagues, please make sure you follow these IPC steps.

COVID-19 and flu vaccinations – act now

Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 and flu are two of the most important things you can do to keep yourself and your patients safe.

Please don’t delay.

  • The COVID-19 vaccination offer will end for staff and the general public on Wednesday 31 January 2024.

  • We are approaching peak flu season so act now to make sure you are protected. The flu vaccine will continue to be available to staff and those members of the public who are eligible until Sunday 31 March 2024.

You can find details of clinics for COVID-19 and flu vaccinations here on HUB:

Sustainability training: learn more about climate change and impact on healthcare

Climate change is impacting healthcare and our patients - take action now to protect our planet and people: complete the sustainability training course to gain Carbon Literacy accreditation

Greener NHS has launched the Carbon Literacy training course to NHS colleagues free of charge. It covers climate change, its impact on our environment and healthcare, and the actions we can take to make a difference.

To complete the training, you are required to complete five online modules (this can be completed in your own time) and attend a half-day online workshop.

Once completed, you will become ‘carbon literate’ and receive a certificate of accreditation.
