Network Rail Stakeholder Update

Railway Improvement Work – Step Free Access at Farnborough North Station

Dear Stakeholders,

We’re writing to follow up from our communication in September.

As you will be aware, we will be undertaking essential improvement work in your area to install a fully accessible new footbridge with lifts and stairs at Farnborough North Station.

Working with the local authorities, this safety improvement will make the station much easier and safer to use for passengers with reduced mobility and all members of the local community. Since our last communication, the schedule of works has been revised as we were awaiting the necessary consents and permissions to start the work.

Site set up at Farnborough North Station has now commenced and the works are programmed to be undertaken throughout 2024 and completed by Winter 2024.

Most of our work will take place Monday to Friday during daytime hours from 07:30 – 17:30. However, there may be some occasions where some of the work will need to be carried out overnight or during weekends when the trains are not running. To facilitate our construction activities, we will be employing additional Level Crossing Attendants to assist with our deliveries throughout the day and to maintain the safety of users who use the level crossings.

Whilst GWR will still have access for maintenance and cleaning activities, we’ll also need to close off 5 Station car parking spaces to allow the local business, Gibbs and Dandy Builders Merchants, to continue operations whilst the demolition of their outbuilding is taking place to the west of their yard.

The full programme of work begins on 02 January, running through until December 2024 and may be subject to change. We will of course update you should this happen.

A summary of the programme of works is outlined in the tables below:

Although we’ll be using specialist equipment designed to minimise the noise we create, some of our equipment and machinery may cause some disturbance and you’ll notice some increased traffic from delivery vehicles.

You may also hear train horns and safety alarms (fitted to the heavy machinery and road rail vehicles) being sounded; this is because we need to alert our teams working on site and this is a mandatory safety requirement set at a volume that cannot be reduced. We are sorry in advance for any disturbance and inconvenience this causes you. Every effort will be made to minimise any excessive noise while this work is carried out, and we appreciate your support and cooperation while we work in the Farnborough area.

Local residents will have received a letter outlining this information.

We’ll keep you updated as the work progresses. We hope this information is helpful and apologise for any inconvenience this work to upgrade the station will cause.

Kind regards

Network Rail Southern Region Stakeholder Team
