Learning from Patient Safety Events service goes live in December

Every year the NHS reports over 2m patient safety events. To help unlock the full learning potential from these incidents a new national service Learning from Patient Safety Events (LFPSE) is being introduced. LFPSE will use machine learning and other tools to generate insights from events recorded across the NHS.

We are going live with the new LFPSE service on Friday 1 December 2023. From that date when you complete an incident report on Datix it will be uploaded to the LFPSE service. You can read more about this and the changes to the Datix incident reporting form here on HUB.

LFPSE have produced a short film to introduce the platform. You can watch the film by clicking on the image above or this link.

Exciting new era for Royal Devon’s two hospital charities

Following the integration of our Trusts, hospital charities Over and Above and the RD&E Charity are joining forces! From December 4, the new-look charity will be known as Royal Devon Hospitals Charity. Same charity. Different name. Double the fundraising power for our local NHS!

Royal Devon wins Towards Net Zero award at HSJ Awards

image.

An innovative project, aimed at minimising the carbon footprint associated with anaesthetic gases in healthcare, won the prestigious Towards Net Zero award at the 2023 HSJ Awards on Thursday 16 November.

Pete Ford, Consultant Anaesthetist and Clinical Lead for Business Innovation and Sustainability, has been spearheading a number of initiatives around reducing anaesthetic gases, which have a negative impact on both air quality and the environment when released into the atmosphere. To date, the project has achieved an impressive 80.6% reduction in Nitrous Oxide, 93% reduction in Desflurane usage, and a 57% reduction in the total use of anaesthetic gases in procedures.

Pete said: “We’re totally thrilled to have won this award. We are aware of the prestige and positivity that goes hand in hand with winning the Towards Net Zero award at the HSJ Awards – and the feel-good factor extends beyond our team, impacting on our colleagues right across the organisation. When it comes to the green agenda, we have shown what can be done if like-minded individuals pull in the same direction. This is the very beginning of our collective journey to net zero.”

Full details are on HUB.

National recognition for our Preceptorship programme and new  framework

We’re delighted to have received the Quality Mark from the National Preceptorship team for our nursing preceptorship programme.

This award is a fantastic achievement and acknowledges the importance we place on supporting newly registered staff in their first year.

The Quality Mark has been accomplished through the hard-work of our preceptorship teams, preceptors, preceptorship buddies, preceptorship champions, and of course our preceptees, thank you for all that you do to ensure we have an excellent programme and that the next generation are supported, nurtured and able to provide high quality care to our patients.

NHS Staff Survey closes on Friday – please have your say

Read the full message from Paul Roberts, Interim Chief Executive Officer, on HUB.

The 2023 NHS Staff Survey closes on Friday 24 November, so if you haven’t taken part yet, I’d like to encourage you to use these last few days to give us your feedback on the Royal Devon.

I’ve said it before, but I really do believe that the Staff Survey is probably the most important feedback mechanism we have. There's really good evidence that the things that impact on you, impact on our patients, so we need to know what those things impacting on you are. I make no apologies for strongly encouraging people to fill in their questionnaire, as the more responses we get, the more information we get on what you’re feeling, so we’re better able to respond to the things you raise through the survey.

You should have received your final email reminder from Picker on Monday, which will have your link to the survey in it, so please just click on the link in the email to take part. If you’ve received the survey in hard copy instead, please complete it that way as well.

All-staff webinar recording available to watch now

Please ensure you are sending letters to patients through the correct route

If you send letters to patients either directly or via an admin team, please remember:

  • All clinical patient correspondence must be printed locally and sent through the post room – please check that your printer settings are set up to do this correctly in Epic – if you need further guidance on how to do this please reach out to the Epic Admin Support team

  • Printing to Synertec is only for appointment letters (and no other form of correspondence) for which we have a service level agreement in place - if you are not sure please check with the Central Support team.

We are aware of instances where teams are sending clinical correspondence to Synertec for processing – these items will be returned to your team to send out.

We are working on improvements to how we send letters, including increased automation and digital options and will share more information soon.

We've improved our induction process thanks to your feedback

Following feedback from staff and hiring managers about our induction earlier this year, the People Development Service have worked with subject matter experts to further improve the induction experience for our new starters.

The majority of staff were satisfied with the induction process, however there were a number of areas you felt could be improved, including:

  • Clearer and more timely communications for both hiring managers and new starters so they know what to expect and can plan
  • More support to be given throughout the process which would reduce anxiety and make new starters feel welcome
  • More tailored support for new managers joining the Trust

National Nursing Support Workers' Day, Thursday 23 November

A message from, Carolyn Mills, Chief Nursing Officer, Tracey Reeves, Director of Nursing, Eastern services, and Bev Allingham, Director of Nursing, Northern services

Tomorrow, Thursday 23 November, is National Nursing Support Workers Day. This year’s theme is “shining a spotlight on the nursing support workforce across the UK”, highlighting the vital contribution and significant impact they make both to patient care and the experience of patients in health and social care.

image.

The true extent of the work carried out by the Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals support workforce is often hidden, but their value is never underestimated. Nursing Support Workers’ Day is therefore an opportunity to recognise and  celebrate the essential work they undertake every day across our organisation.

You can find out more about Nursing Support Workers' Day at this link.

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week: event aTLC on Friday 24 November

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week is a global campaign encouraging responsible use of all antimicrobials: antibiotics, antifungals, antiparasitic and antivirals. The aim is to raise awareness of developing antibacterial resistance and make sure that antimicrobial medicines don’t become ineffective.

Our foundation training pharmacists are holding an on-site event in TLC at the RD&E (Wonford) on Friday 24 November.

Please visit their Antimicrobial Awareness Stand. They will have quizzes, games and information to spread awareness.

Allergy awareness training updated

Our updated Allergy Awareness e-Learning is now available through Learn+.

This is a one-off training session and will take approximately one hour to complete.
The subject matter expert for this training has reviewed the roles that will require this training, and this will appear on the relevant colleagues' compliance dashboard on Learn+.

Please note that if you previously completed the old eLearning package, you will not need to complete the new course to remain compliant. However, if you would like to refresh your knowledge on this topic, please do complete the new eLearning package.

Thank you: Nick Moore

Today's thank you comes from Georgina Martin, Clinical Nurse Specialist Lymphoedema/ Team Lead, and Angela Ives, Lymphoedema Specialist Practitioner: "The North Devon Lymphoedema team would like to nominate Nick Moore, Project Delivery Lead for Northern Digital Services, for going the extra mile with the support he has given the team recently.

image.

"We purchased a new piece of essential equipment to use in the assessment of lymphoedema patients to improve the patient experience.

"Nick went above and beyond with his assistance to the team in acknowledging governance and GDPR issues, attending meetings and writing reports on our behalf. Without his help, we would have found this a really challenging experience, trying to achieve this within our clinical duties.

"He made the whole process easier, communicated at every step and was timely in his responses. We would like to say a huge thank you."

Care Opinion: "I feel listened to and understood"

Well done to the Pain Management team at NDDH for this great feedback on Care Opinion: "I know that the support, advice and guidance I have received through the pain clinic has been a vital lifeline, especially when my mental health has put me at risk, and when I am in the worst pain and circumstances.

image.

"I would thoroughly recommend this service to others as an effective way to keep engaged with the options available and the support offered."

Top tips to help reduce your energy usage at work and home

This year, we’re asking you to help us reduce the amount of energy we use across the Trust so we can lower our carbon footprint and minimise our impact on the environment - it also helps us toward achieving goals in our Green Plan.

It's important to look at our own habits - a useful way to do this is ask, ‘would I leave this on at home?’. More often than not, the answer will be no.

image.

Making small changes goes a long way. To help, we’ve a list of what to look out for:

  • Power down all devices completely

  • Report broken thermostats and air conditioning

  • Shut non fire doors where it is safe to do so

  • Save 340kg of carbon each year by turning off the lights at work
