Welcome to October's issue of Go Higher West Yorkshire's (GHWY) Care to Go Higher newsletter.


In this issue we present key evaluation findings from our latest iteration of the Care to Go Higher CPD programme, which underline the continuing impact it has on helping key influencers to support their young people into HE.


National Care Leavers Week will take place across the UK between 25 October to 1 November. This year we are being asked to CARE: to Celebrate care leavers, Amplify their voices, Raise awareness of challenges and Encourage change in policy and practice. Find out more. Look out for the social media campaign we will be running on X (formerly Twitter) throughout the week.

CPD increases participant understanding of care-experienced young people


People who attended the latest iteration of our Care to Go Higher CPD  for key influencers of care-experienced young people increased their knowledge by 48% across six key metrics.

University of Bradford named eighth for social inclusion


The University of Bradford, one of our 13  member institutions, has been ranked eighth in the UK for social inclusion in the latest Times/Sunday Times University Rankings 2024.


Bradford is also among the top 10 most successful at narrowing the black awarding gap and is placed third for first generation students, with two thirds of entrants being the first in their family to go to university.

Learn from Care to Go Higher

We have been running our innovative Care to Go Higher CPD programme for the key influencers of care-experienced young people since 2019. In this series of articles, we share some of the information from it that focuses on educational support.

Barriers to HE for care-experienced students


Previous blogs in this series have looked in-depth at some of the barriers to HE that care-experienced students may face. This month we look at some more challenges they may face. Many of them overlap with each other but they can all be factors in reduced progression to HE.  

Understanding where there may be a lack of support can help address the gaps.

Upcoming CPD opportunities

Many care-experienced students also have additional support needs, such as a disability or being from a minority ethnicity. These free sessions provide a broader understanding of these lived experiences and ways in which to engage with young people.

Self-paced learning


We offer a range of opportunities to upskill and build confidence for individuals who support young people with their educational progression. 


Our opportunities align with the academic year, covering topics such as preparing students for admissions interviews, equipping them with current knowledge on apprenticeships, clearing and student finance.


We also offer sessions that focus on personal and professional development, such as mentoring skills and presentation skills.

Upcoming Higher Education (HE) events

HE events can help young people to plan the next steps on their educational journey. They offer an opportunity to visit campuses, talk to staff and current students, and learn more about what courses are available. They are free, with in-person as well as online options usually available.

University Centre Leeds Open Event


When: Wednesday, 15 November, between 4-6pm

Where: Online

  

Your young person will have the opportunity to attend live video chat sessions with University Centre Leeds’ subject teams and student support teams.


They will also be able to discover why it has been rated as having the highest student satisfaction in Leeds* (*NSS 2023).

University of Bradford Open Day


When: Saturday, 18 November

Where: University of Bradford


Help your young person to discover what it is like to study at the University of Bradford.


They can find out more about the subjects they are interested in; finance and funding; accommodation; and support available to them.


They will also have the opportunity to ask their own questions.

Is your young person interested in nursing? If so they might benefit from attending this open day to find out more about BSc Nursing (Adult) – Mid Yorkshire Hospitals programme (starting in April 2024).

Latest HE sector updates 

Young aspiring artists design John Lewis Partnership's Made with Care collection


The John Lewis Partnership has unveiled the first design for a new lifestyle brand that will be curated with designers and creators who have grown up in the care system - Made With Care.


The new brand marks the start of a new design focused collaboration created by people who have had experience of the care system. 


The first product is designed by Michael Archibald, who worked with the John Lewis in-house design team and its creative partners Saatchi & Saatchi to create a design for a sustainable tote bag.

Care-experienced man prepares for job in care industry after graduating


A 22-year-old man who spent three years in a care unit after 'misbehaving' at school has graduated from UHI Moray.


On leaving care he decided to make up for some of his missed years of education and applied to study a Level 5 in Social Services, then progressed through Level 6 and graduated with a HNC.


He has already found employment and, taking him full cycle, he is now working in the care industry himself for Cornerstone.

Our spotlight features highlight what support most of our 13 member institutions offer to care-experienced young people. They detail care leaver contacts, financial support, and bespoke campus tours among other things.

Each 'what support we offer' feature is regularly updated to ensure that content is up to date, which makes them a valuable resource when guiding your young people through their HE journey.
