Throughout September, Richmond's Local Studies Library & Archive invites you to delve deeper into the fascinating history of Richmond upon Thames through the annual Know Your Place Festival.

In 2023 we are celebrating 10 years of this festival that celebrates and promotes exploring the rich history of Richmond upon Thames. Initially created as a way of promoting our Local Studies Library & Archive, the festival is now a wonderful celebration of all-things Richmond. Know Your Place continues to grow and evolve, reflecting the curiosity and creativity of Richmond's residents, both past and present.

The Circumference of the World

With multi-award-winning sci-fi author Lavie Tidhar.

Belle Parole! Italian Conversation Group

Starting Friday 8 September, come and flex your language muscles at our friendly and informal conversation group with the guidance of a native speaker.

Children's Chess & Strategy Games Club

Discover the exciting world of chess and other strategy games such as Connect 4, Chinese Checkers, Othello and more, under the guidance of professional chess teachers.

Would you like help learning about all the free and paid for streaming services available to you, such as BBC iPlayer or Netflix? 

Come along to our training session, where you can find out how to sign up, organise what you watch, as well as familiarise yourself with all the choices out there. At the end of the session, staff will be on-hand to assist you on whichever devices you’ve brought in.

Explorer's Quest

Join in the fun at a free Explore Learning Workshop as part of the Summer Reading Challenge, Ready, Set, Read!


Designed for children aged 5-11, in this 1-hour workshop they will embark on a thrilling quest that’ll put their skills in maths and English to the test! They’ll overcome challenges and puzzles to uncover the mystery of the missing Blaze the Phoenix, mascot of The Explore Games! The Explore Games can’t start without Blaze, so we’ll need all the help we can get to find them!

Adult Summer Reading Challenge

The Adult Summer Reading Challenge has begun - with actual prizes! Upon completion, you will be entered into a raffle with the chance to win a free book and chocolate! To sign up, log onto your library account and sign up here.

Rules & Guidance

  • The challenge will take place from Friday 21 July until Friday 15 September.
  • The books must be library books.
  • Please complete a minimum of three books.
  • Upon completion, you must mark your challenge as complete, or else you will not be entered into the raffle.
  • The winner will be contacted on Wednesday 20 September.
  • Even though this is called the 'adult' reading challenge, you can participate as long as you have your own library account and are over the age of 11.

Four to eleven-year-olds can sign up at their local library, receive a Ready, Set, Read! pack, then read any six library books of their choice to collect special stickers and other rewards along the way.
