Phil Knowles
Leader of Harborough District Council

I am delighted to introduce my first residents’ newsletter as the new leader of Harborough District Council.

Following the district elections in May 2023, the new cabinet is comprised of councillors from The Liberal Democrats, The Labour Party and The Green Party, after we came together to form a coalition to run the council.

We have an excellent team – a team determined to work to deliver the very best for the whole of Harborough district.

Thank you to everyone who took the opportunity to vote in the elections. You can find local councillor and contact information and see when council meetings are taking place and how to watch or read the meeting minutes online.

You can also read details about the new chairman.

Coming up in June is the Great Big Green Week, a national campaign which celebrates and boosts community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

We also have Lutterworth Job Fair and the launch of the Big Community Switch

I look forward to seeing you at some of these exciting initiatives.

Phil

The Council awarded a total of £20,000 to 45 community projects across Harborough district to mark the recent Coronation.

The Coronation Community Grant Scheme was set up to help voluntary and not for profit organisations within, or that benefit, Harborough district with projects that enable better health and wellbeing as a lasting commemoration of the Coronation of King Charles III.

To be successful organisations that applied had to have a charitable or community goal and be constituted. The grant did not cover core running costs or salaries.

Communities were also able to apply for a grant to celebrate The Coronation Big Lunch on 7 May'23 or The Big Help Out on 8 May'23.

Funding of up to £500 was awarded to a range of projects in the district, including gardening equipment, community seating, sports equipment and more!

Good Boost for health in Harborough

Harborough Leisure Centre is taking part in an exciting project funded by UKRI (UK Research Institute) who are looking to transform gyms and leisure centres into community MSK (musculoskeletal) hubs.

Good Boost is a specialised therapeutic exercise program which is focused on transforming any space into a therapeutic place by using tablets that can be adapted to land-based or water-based exercises.

The exercises are geared towards helping people who suffer from various types of MSK conditions such as lower back pain, ligament damage, osteoarthritis etc. The NHS has officially approved the programmes as being in line with their guidelines and standards.

Good Boost programmes are specifically tailored to each individual participant, suiting their own needs, and according to their own ability and health condition.

The sessions are available to anyone who feels they would benefit from exercise intervention. They are also available to anyone that is currently on the Harborough Exercise Referral Programme.

If you would like more information please contact Nick Evatt, Active Communities & Well-being Manager: nicholasevatt@everyoneactive.com

Former bank makeover in Lutterworth

A former bank in the centre of Lutterworth has been transformed having been wrapped in vinyl to encourage potential new tenants and improve the look of the town.

image.

Cllr Sarfas and Cllr Gair, ward councillors for Lutterworth East, at the vinyl-wrapped property in Lutterworth.

By working with specialist designers, we have created the impression of fully furnished premises (in this case, a restaurant theme), to show investors what the former Lloyds Bank could look like for a thriving business.

If you are interested in considering taking on the lease of this property, please email the economic development team at business@harborough.gov.uk who will connect you with the commercial agents.

Please do get in touch if you know of any long-standing vacant town centre retail units in Harborough district which could potentially benefit from a similar facelift. Please email: business@harborough.gov.uk
