Changing Places launch at Welland Park

Changing Places in Welland Park, Market Harborough

Welland Park in Market Harborough has seen its toilet facilities extensively refurbished by the council to modernise and make them fully accessible, with improved disabled provisions for children and adults.

The transformation means families will benefit from specialist equipment including a height adjustable changing table and associated hoist, nonslip flooring, reduced ceiling height, privacy screens and clear manoeuvring space.

Changing Places UK aims to give people with disabilities access to safe, clean and dignified public toilet facilities, to ensure they can participate inclusively in society.

We are now exploring the possibility of securing further Changing Places funding for similar facilities elsewhere in the district.

If you have any suggestions about existing toilets, in publicly accessible locations, which could be re-developed as future Changing Places facilities, please contact us by emailing:

Emergency alerts system

The new Government Emergency Alerts Service is now live and a UK-wide test will take place on Sunday 23 April 2023.

The new system will enable people to be contacted via their mobile phone if their lives are at risk in an emergency.

Emergency Alerts are messages sent to all compatible 4G and 5G mobile phones when there’s a
danger to your life, health or property in the area you’re located.

They don’t need your location or phone number. Only the government and the emergency services can send them.

If you don’t have a mobile, you’ll still be kept informed through other channels.

If you get an Emergency Alert on your phone, you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound. A message on your screen will tell you about the emergency and how best to respond.

You’ll be able to check an alert is genuine at gov.uk/alerts.

Fly-tipping drops as campaign continues to crack down

The number of fly-tipping incidents in Harborough district has fallen in tandem with an ongoing council initiative to stamp it out.

For the fourth year running, our ‘Tip-Off’ campaign has achieved a reduction of fly tips. It aims to inform the public about how they can report illegally dumped rubbish and prevent it.

A total of 728 incidents were reported in 2018/19 compared to 264 at the end of January in 2022/23.

Throughout the campaign, our environmental crime team has consistently worked with residents, parishes and other groups to crack down and enforce on fly-tipping.

Keep an eye on our news pages to read more about some of the things our environmental crime officers have been doing to tackle fly-tipping  - coming soon!

Contaminated recycling is rejected

Did you know that your blue-lidded recycling bin can be classed contaminated – despite having no non-recyclables inside?

Our collection crews frequently find pizza boxes containing the uneaten crusts in the blue-lidded recycling bin, and even yogurt pots that remain half full. This could contaminate an entire vehicle worth of waste which is approximately 18 tonnes!

Please take a minute to scrape any remnants out of half-eaten food items, and give it a quick rinse after, so the bulk-waste is not refused at the mixed-recycling facility.

Sauce bottles can be cleaned by adding water, closing the lid and giving it a shake to help empty out any leftover contents.

Please ensure these guidelines are followed before placing items in your blue-lidded bin, to help drive down contamination rates in our district, and ensure that more items are recycled.
