News and features from Harborough District Council - September 2022

Cllr Phil King
Leader of Harborough District Council

Exploring innovative ways for public to shape communities

We have another busy month ahead; I hope residents enjoyed the recent events to celebrate the Women's World Gliding Championships - the first time the competition has been held in the UK.

What a truly fantastic occasion to showcase our district on the world stage, and so a big thank you to everyone who attended and supported our opening ceremonies.

Speaking of support, I am also delighted that scores of residents have already helped test out new software designed to help get more of you, engaged in the planning process.

Consultation and listening to the views of residents and businesses across our communities is important.

New development is necessary, but we need to make sure that it happens in the right place, at the right time, and that residents can help shape how their places will look in the future via our Local Plan.

The Government has chosen Harborough District Council along with  a small number of other councils, to pilot new PropTech software to see if this makes it easier for local residents  to engage and influence development in their communities.

Please do have a go, and test this out and let us know how you get on via our quick poll.

Finally, as we approach Recycle Week 2022, I'd like to praise everyone who has helped recycle over the past year. Our bin collection crews do a great job - often in extreme weather - and it is rewarding for them, and us, that recycling is up on last year. Well done everyone!

Event to support

Ukrainian families

Recently relocated Ukrainian refugees are inviting to a special event aimed at providing support and guidance as they make a new life in the district.

The ‘market-style’ drop-in event will include a welcome from Harborough MP Neil O’Brien and Cllr Phil King, Leader of Harborough District Council, and there will be advice stalls and a host of partner representatives available to offer support.

There will be advice on jobs, housing, mental health, carers support, young people’s activities, adult learning, health and well-being, and local charities.

There will be a separate room for children’s activities to allow parents to get the most out of the evening.

It will take place Friday 16 September 2022, from 5pm -7pm, at Market Harborough Methodist Church, in Northampton Road.

Help test our exciting new approach to consulting public on planning

You’ve been busy testing our exciting new software to get you more involved in the planning process.

In fact, we had around 60 responses in just a matter of hours! The total is now over 150.

We're piloting the user-friendly software after the local authority received £125,000 fromthe Government's PropTech Engagement Fund. It is hoped the new technology will encourage more people from a younger demographic than usual to have their say on planning issues.

Please take part in our ‘Quick Poll’ on green spaces to help test the software before 12 September 2022 at

Inspiring women's glider championships puts district on world stage

With 12 competing nations, 43 elite gliding pilots with crews and supporters, plus hundreds of visitors, there was lots to enjoy during the Women’s World Gliding Championships 2022.

Organisers successfully hosted the amazing eco-sporting event, supported by the Council, and held for the first time in Great Britain at the Gliding Centre, Husbands Bosworth, despite setbacks of mixed weather and flying conditions.

The fortnight, packed full of action, included opening events to welcome the teams in Market Harborough and Lutterworth, with local shop windows dressed in the competing nation colours, have-a-go sessions on a glider simulator, activities for children and families, plus a special visit from the Council Chairman and Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire.

As well as a free open weekend, giving people a chance to see the action close up, the final flight day saw an Aerosparx international pyrotechnic display and party night.

Find the winners of each of three categories and full results here.

The legacy of the competition is to empower more women to get into the sport.  Are you feeling inspired to get up there and feel the freedom of powerless flight?

Nearly 50 employment offers made at last jobs event so don't miss out

Two more drop-in Job Fairs are being held in the district in September giving you the chance to speak directly to employers about local vacancies.

The last event of its kind (pictured) saw nearly 50 on-the-spot job offers made - that's amazing and shows the great opportunities available.

The next Job Fair, run by the Council and JobCentre Plus, takes place at the Wycliffe Rooms in Lutterworth on Friday 2 September, 11am-2pm, with another following in Market Harborough at The Symington Building on Thursday 15 September, 11am-2pm.

Amazing recycling efforts praised as dedicated week gets underway

You, and others across Harborough district, have helped us recycle over 10,000 tonnes of waste already this year.

That's the equivalent of the weight of 330 refuse collection vehicles! And it's even more than was recycled last year. If all that uncompacted waste was put together on the pitch at Leicester City's King Power Stadium, it would reach a height of 17 metres!

Thank you for helping us reach our recycling goals and achieving one of the best recycling rates in the county.

Recycle Week takes place from 19-25 September and this year’s theme is ‘Let’s Get Real’ which is challenging perceptions and myths around recycling, and targeting contamination to improve recycling behaviours.

Look out for more details about this on our social media channels around this time.
