Better Environments for Tolworth
| Six months on from our last update and works continue apace on the new Tala Building at Tolworth Hospital.
The project has now reached an important stage, with brickwork complete, scaffolding gradually coming down, and the final façade emerging across the site. |
|
|
Inside the building, work is advancing at pace too. The internal layout is now clearly defined, with partition walls in place to form the new wards. Early installation of essential systems - including mechanical, electrical and plumbing - is also well underway.
Investing in our future Tala is on course for completion in 2027 with services due to move in from early 2028. This will eventually mean a total of seven mental health wards operating at Tolworth Hospital, up from three, supporting rebalanced provision across Tolworth and Springfield Hospitals.
Following Springfield’s £150m transformation, this will mean a total of £260m invested to provide modern inpatient services for the 1.2 million people we serve across Kingston and South West London. | |
A first look at the new façade | Working with our local community
Creating long-term value for the local community is a key part of this programme. Our construction team has continued its partnership with Tolworth Girls’ School, supporting careers education and offering practical opportunities for students, including work experience placements.
Alongside this, we are pleased to be developing a new partnership with The Community Brain, a Kingston-based community organisation. Together, we will deliver an arts programme for Tolworth Hospital in the run-up to completion. This will bring artworks and installations created by local artists into the hospital environment, helping to create welcoming and therapeutic spaces that support wellbeing for patients, staff and visitors. There will be opportunities for engagement for all directly influencing and shaping the environment at Tolworth Hospital.
Thank you, as ever, for your continued support and patience as we work towards this exciting future for Tolworth Hospital. |

Key works ongoing - Revealing the building’s final appearance
As scaffolding is removed, more of the façade will become visible, giving a clearer view of the finished Tala Building.
- Progressing internal systems
Mechanical, electrical and plumbing installations will continue across the building as internal areas are developed further. - Starting internal finishing works
Work will begin on flooring, joinery and doors, alongside the fit-out of new restaurant and café areas.
- Focusing on internal completion
Through the rest of 2026 and into 2027, activity will centre on completing internal spaces and preparing for final testing and commissioning of building systems. - Transitioning external works across the site
Some elements of the site set-up will begin to wind down, making way for drainage and landscaping works across the hospital campus.
- Managing construction impacts
Environmental monitoring will continue, taking into account the hotter weather, with measures such as dampening down dust in work areas and careful planning of noisier activities. - External works moving around the campus
Over the summer, activity will take place within western hoarded areas, near Ellis Ward on Draycott Road, and at the Red Lion Road entrance (see more detail in Sir Robert McAlpine's latest letter drop to residents).
Detailed updates on our activities and any works near our site boundaries can be found in our partners' monthly letter drop - more information can also be found on our programme homepage.

The team in action at Tolworth Girls' school | Inspiring the next generation
Alongside progress on the redevelopment, our construction partner Sir Robert McAlpine has continued to invest in the local community by working closely with Tolworth Girls' School to inspire young people and showcase the wide range of career opportunities available within construction.
Back in January the team participated in a Year 8 Careers Fair, speaking with students about careers in the industry and sharing insights into the diverse roles involved in delivering major projects. In May, two Year 10 students completed a three-day work experience placement, giving them valuable first-hand exposure to different departments and career pathways within construction. More recently, Sir Robert McAlpine joined colleagues from the Trust to deliver an interactive Year 8 Careers Day, combining role-based discussions with practical activities to help students explore future opportunities in both healthcare and construction.
These activities form part of a wider commitment to creating lasting social value through the Tolworth redevelopment and supporting local young people to develop skills, confidence and aspirations for their future careers. |
