Hello ,
With the summer fast approaching, I hope that you have had a good year and are doing OK through the assessment period. I appreciate this can be a challenging time. A new study from the Sussex Centre for Research on Kindness shows that practising self-kindness and self-compassion can have a positive effect on wellbeing during exam periods.
Throughout your Sussex journey, keep in mind that a postgraduate degree can increase your employability prospects for future work. The Sussex Alumni Scholarship provides a £3,000 fee reduction for eligible Masters courses.
I understand you might not want to be thinking about this right away. Some of our Masters courses start in January, such as our Master of Business Administration, and others are online with multiple entry points. That means you could take some time away from study to travel, work or volunteer before rejoining us to further your education.
We are really proud of everything you do at Sussex, and we are showcasing student contributions to the community, in an open exhibition Celebrating Sussex. Please do come along to the ACCA on Friday 29 May from 11am to join this. There will be ice cream. And finally, for those of you who are interested in electronic music, University Radio Falmer is hosting a special live music event at the Attenborough Centre, featuring DJs and live performances inspired by Brighton’s underground electronic scene on Saturday 23 May, with all students able to access concession-priced tickets.

Join Brighton & Hove Pride Community Parade
I am really pleased that Sussex is taking part in the Brighton & Hove Pride Community Parade 2026. Sussex has a long tradition of supporting Brighton Pride, which is one of the oldest and biggest in the world. If you are in Brighton over the summer, I would encourage you to take part as part of the University community.
The parade takes place on Saturday 1 August. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so I encourage you to book your slot as soon as possible. |
Sussex Uni Food celebrates another major sustainability win
Sussex Uni Food, the University’s catering partner that runs Eat Central and other food outlets across campus, has achieved the highest possible rating, three stars in the Sustainable Restaurant Association’s Food Made Good standard, for the fourth year running.
The food available on campus is also helping to reduce the University’s environmental impact. You might be interested to try the recently introduced locally sourced venison and Chalk Stream trout as alternatives to higher-impact meats. This is helping lower the carbon footprint of menus while supporting more sustainable supply chains.
Essential sea swimming safety information
Please be aware that sea swimming can be dangerous. If you choose to swim, make sure you are aware of your surroundings and check how the weather and sea conditions could affect your safety. Read this article on the Student Hub for essential sea swimming safety advice.
| Sussex reaccredited as a University of Sanctuary
Our university has a long history of supporting students and academics seeking sanctuary and standing by the rights of vulnerable communities. We have done this through our scholarships, research, and community engagement.
After first being recognised as a University of Sanctuary in 2020 for our work supporting and welcoming forced migrants, it is fantastic news that Sussex was reaccredited earlier this spring. University of Sanctuary status is awarded to institutions that actively support refugee communities, work to remove barriers to education, and help create inclusive environments for displaced people.
| New Sussex research highlights the importance of self-kindness during exam season
New research from the University of Sussex Centre for Research on Kindness has highlighted the positive impact that self-kindness and self-compassion can have during stressful periods, including exam season.
During revision and assessments, it can be easy to focus only on studying and productivity, but taking breaks, managing expectations and recognising your efforts are all important too. It is worth keeping this in mind this exam period. Be kind to yourself and take time for your wellbeing.
Important information about your Sussex IT account after graduation
If you are graduating this year, it is important to plan ahead for the closure of your Sussex IT account. After your course ends, you will eventually lose access to your University email account, OneDrive storage and other Sussex digital services. Make sure you save any important files, documents or personal emails you want to keep before your account closes.
If you use CareerHub, your student account will close when your course ends, but a graduate account will automatically be created using your personal email address so you can continue accessing careers support after Sussex.
Final year students: look out for the Graduate Outcomes survey
If you are a final year student, you will be contacted over the next 15 months to take part in the Graduate Outcomes survey. The survey asks about what you are doing after graduation, including work, further study and other experiences after university.
Your responses help future students understand graduate career paths and experiences, while also helping universities improve courses and support services.
