Hello

As we head towards the spring vacation, there are many opportunities to balance your studies, to be inspired, to have fun and to celebrate at Sussex. A sporting highlight is the Varsity Fortnight, and whether you are playing or cheering from the sidelines, now is the time to support our amazing student teams as they compete against Brighton University.

Sussex works in partnership with the incredible Brighton Festival, now in its 60th year and the biggest cross-arts festival in England. This includes bringing the student and staff co-created, Festival of Ideas to campus. This is a great chance to hear from your peers, researchers and guest speakers on topics from culture and community to science and society. Events include AI and the Arts, Queer Archiving, Racial Justice and Neurodivergence. Come along!

This Saturday there are chances to explore the exciting opportunities and benefits of further study at the Masters Open Day, and to find out more about funding. There are also opportunities to build confidence on two guided bike rides between Brighton and campus (free healthy Sussex Uni Food breakfast for all who take part) , enjoy student-inspired food at this term’s Student Food Takeover and enjoy the Easter Egg Hunt for a chance to win £20 in food credit prizes.

How to win a graduation package worth £150

Take part in the National Student Survey for your chance to win one of 10 graduation packages. Each £150 prize will cover the cost of gown hire, two guest tickets and a basic photography package. The winners of these prizes will be picked at random.

The National Student Survey is open until Tuesday 30 April. The NSS is an external survey, independent of the University, that gives you the chance to tell the world about your time at Sussex.

Plus, for every Sussex student who takes part in the NSS, we will donate £1 to charity. The donation will be split between the charities voted for by students in December.

Show off your Class of 2026 t-shirt

Over the Easter break, we would love to see where your NSS Class of 2026 t- shirt travels. If you have completed the National Student Survey and picked up your t-shirt from your Schools Office, take it with you and snap a photo of yourself wearing it wherever you are spending the break.

Whether you are visiting somewhere new, heading home, travelling abroad, or exploring somewhere around Sussex, share a photo of you wearing your Class of 2026 t-shirt. The more unusual or scenic the location, the better.

Post your photo on Instagram and tag us, or email internalcomms@sussex.ac.uk. We will be selecting some of our favourite photos, especially those from the most interesting or unexpected locations, to feature in an upcoming news story on the Student Hub.

Happy Easter everyone.

Last chance to log your Spirit of Sussex Award points

If you are in your final year, you are probably starting to think about life after graduation. The Spirit of Sussex Award is an excellent way to strengthen your CV by showcasing your wider skills and experiences to future employers.

If you are a finalist, this is your last chance to log your points for the Spirit of Sussex Award before the 1 April deadline. The award recognises the activities you have taken part in alongside your degree, including volunteering, part-time work, societies, sport, leadership roles and more.

Festival of Ideas returns to Sussex as part of Brighton Festival

The Festival of Ideas is returning to Sussex as part of the wider Brighton Festival, one of the UK’s largest and most established curated multi-arts festivals. Sussex is proud to be a partner in this important cultural event in the city. The Festival of Ideas brings together students, researchers and the wider community for a programme of talks and discussions exploring some of the most important ideas shaping our world today, from politics and culture to science and society.

Some highlights of the festival that you might be interested in taking part in include, Postcards from Brighton, a digital photography exhibition that explores the city beyond its typical summer image, Weaving the Neurodivergent Brain-Body Together, drawing on socially engaged and performance art, storytelling and sensory exploration, or Closing the Gap, Opening the Stage, a cross-generational panel of alumni, academics, and Student Union leaders to navigate the complexities of racial justice and belonging to Sussex and Brighton.

Have you ever thought about cycling between Brighton and campus?

The Sussex Sustainability Team is hosting two guided beginner rides on 18 March to help you build confidence and explore a more sustainable way to travel.

Join the morning ride from The Level in Brighton to campus (8.15am to 9.00am), or the afternoon ride from campus to Brighton (5.00pm to 5.30pm). It is a great opportunity to try the route with others, meet like-minded students and staff, and learn more about sustainable travel options. Participants in the morning ride will also receive a free healthy Sussex Uni Food breakfast at Eat Central.

Student Food Takeover, bringing a taste of home to Sussex

The Student Food Takeover is back for its third year, bringing student-inspired dishes to campus at subsidised prices. Students have shared recipes from home, which will be recreated by Sussex Uni Food chefs and served to the Sussex community.

The first dish this term is Loaded Onion Bhajis, submitted by Sanika Pisal, whose recipe has already proved popular with friends at Norwich House. You can try the dish at Eat Central’s blue kiosk on 18 March and Thursday 19 March. Keep an eye out for more Student Food Takeover dishes appearing on campus menus later this term.

Join an Easter egg hunt on campus and win £20 food credit prizes

An Easter Egg Hunt is taking place on campus with the chance to win one of 20 food credit prizes. Keep an eye out for hidden eggs around campus and follow the clues for your chance to take part. The hunt will take place next week from Monday 16 March until Friday 20 March.

It is a fun way to explore campus and win credit to spend on food and drink. Find out how to take part

Congratulations to your new Students’ Union officers

The Sussex Students’ Union Leadership Election results are in, and a huge congratulations goes to the students who have been elected to represent you for the year ahead. Thank you to everyone who ran, campaigned and voted.

Student officers play an important role as the elected voice of students at Sussex. Their job is to represent all student interests to the University, helping shape decisions that affect education, welfare, housing, societies and everyday campus life. If you have ideas, concerns or feedback you would like your representatives to raise, you can contact them at studentvoice@sussexstudent.com

With best wishes,

Kate
