Hello,

Over the next week, there are three celebrations and festivals to mark, and to take part in on campus. The first is Valentine’s Day which is fast approaching, and it has been wonderful to see so many students enjoying the activities in the Student Centre this week, as part of our With Love, From Sussex event. From origami and bracelet making, to magic performances and free food, there has been plenty to enjoy. There is still a chance to get involved in some the activities – check out the full schedule.

Tuesday is the Lunar New Year, marking the start of the lunar calendar, and 2026 is the year of the Horse. In the Chinese zodiac, the horse is the symbol of freedom, energy, independence, enthusiasm, and ambition, sentiments that are apt for personal growth and self-development, something you all, as students, embody.

Next week will also mark the beginning of Ramadan, the start of the holy month of fasting and prayer for Muslims on campus and around the world. In addition to some support from the Student's Union and University, our student Islamic Society have been fundraising to help provide free iftars (fast-breaking) meals for students during Ramadan, including a fundraising sale tomorrow, Friday 13 February outside the Prayer Room in Falmer House. Follow their Instagram page to find out more.

There are always lots of events, activities and ways of connecting and making friends at Sussex, visit the events section on the Student Hub, and the Experience pages on the Hub, to find out about the many opportunities provided to help you get the most of your time at Sussex.

Please read on for this week’s news including:

Having trouble accessing your Sussex email?

To access your Sussex email, you need to have multi-factor authentication (MFA) set up. If you have not already done this, you can follow the step-by-step instructions online. MFA uses your phone to help keep your account secure, so changing devices can sometimes cause issues, but these are usually easy to resolve. If you still have access to your old phone, you can transfer your MFA token to your new device without needing to contact IT Services. If you are still experiencing problems, you can get support through the IT Support Portal or by visiting the ITS Help page.

Come meet Lewis Wilson, Students’ Union officer and myself at our open office session

Join myself and Lewis Wilson, Students’ Union Education and Employability Officer for our next open office session on 16 February, between 10am and 2pm. This is an opportunity for you to share your experiences of studying at Sussex with us, ask questions, and discuss what is working well or what could be improved. Book a free 15-minute slot.

Call for entries in this year’s Soapbox Science Brighton

If you are a woman, non-binary or genderqueer person who works in science, who is eager to talk to the public about your research work in a fun, informal setting, then Soapbox Science Brighton is for you!

Taking place on Brighton beach on Saturday 30 May, Soapbox Science Brighton is a celebration of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine (STEMM) and helps challenge the stereotypes about who STEMM researchers are.
