Hello,

This month, applications are open for students to join the University’s team of paid Digital Media Creators. This is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in content creation, with a range of exciting briefs ready to film. It is a great way to earn some money, build a portfolio and enhance your career prospects. Applications close on Tuesday 26 November. Find full details on the Student Hub

This Thursday, 20 November, marks Transgender Day of Remembrance, a time to honour the lives of trans people lost to violence and transphobia. The University and Students’ Union will be hosting a free vigil and reflection space open to all students and staff. The day forms part of Trans Awareness Week, which highlights the importance of visibility, allyship, and inclusion for trans and non-binary communities.

Please read on for this week’s updates on:

Tell us about your teaching and learning at Sussex

Keep an eye out for the Autumn Module Evaluation Questionnaires (MEQs), which open on Monday 24 November for all taught students. MEQs are one of the most important ways for you to tell us what is working well in your modules and what could be improved. They are anonymous and take only two to four minutes to complete. On Monday you will receive an e-mail with a link to complete these, please do keep an eye out for this and spend a few minutes filling them in. Find out more.

Celebrate your Sussex spirit and get rewarded

The Spirit of Sussex Award is your chance to be recognised for everything you do beyond your studies. You can collect points for lots of activities, from volunteering and campaigning to creative projects and part-time work. You will earn points for each activity, with Bronze, Silver, or Gold awards presented at graduation to celebrate your achievements. Whether you are giving time, energy, or kindness, it all counts towards your award. Start logging your activities now and make your Sussex experience count on graduation day. Find out more

Cash for being kind

One fun way to collect Spirit of Sussex points, is to get involved with the Drop Dead Generous, project which, rewards charitable and community-minded contributions. In collaboration with Sussex Centre for Research on Kindness, the project is offering $500 grants to 1,000 individuals to carry out acts of kindness, with no strings attached. Grantees simply share their journey through photos and a voice message, which becomes part of the podcast series.

No deposit or guarantor needed! Apply to live on campus

Returning students can now apply for campus accommodation for next year, and it is open to everyone, but it might be especially helpful if you are an international student. Unlike many private rentals, you will not need to pay a deposit or provide a UK guarantor, which can make a big difference if you are sorting housing from abroad or trying to avoid upfront costs.

You can also choose who you live with, so it is a great chance to stay with friends and enjoy being right in the middle of campus life. You will be close to lectures, social spaces, and loads of events, with support available throughout your tenancy. Applications are open now, and places are limited, so it is worth applying early.

An update to the Academic Misconduct Policy

We have updated the Academic Misconduct Policy to make things clearer, with more support if it is your first time facing a concern.

If there is a question about your work as a first case, such as whether it was written via the unauthorised use of AI, you will be invited to talk with your module convenor. Most issues can be sorted in that meeting, including any penalties, without needing to go to a formal panel.

The aim is to help you understand good academic practice, reduce worry and sort things quickly. The formal panel route is still available either for more serious concerns or where you or the module convenor feel this necessary to fully understand what happened. Visit the Student Hub for further information and advice on who to contact.

Discover how to improve your productivity

Improving your productivity can help boost the efforts you put into your studies. If you would like to know how to do this, attend one of our Productivity workshops in-person (26 November, 1.30pm to 2.30pm) or online (27 November, 2pm to 3pm). Workshop registration and info can be found on the Student Hub

Delve into our groundbreaking research

Sign up to the Research at Sussex newsletter to discover how Sussex research is changing lives and shaping the future. From tackling climate disruption and biodiversity loss to leading global conversations on development, Sussex researchers are making a real-world impact. The newsletter delivers fresh insights, breakthroughs, and stories straight to your inbox, whether it is quantum computing, Artificial Intelligence for wildlife protection, or pioneering work with the United Nations and other organisations. It is a great way to stay connected to the ideas, people, and projects driving change across campus and beyond.

Comedians come to Eat Central

Headlined by Olivia Lee, with support from other top professional comedians, tickets start from £11.50 each. Food and drinks will be available throughout the event, and all students are welcome. Doors open at 5.30pm. Book your tickets.

With best wishes,
