Spades are in the ground and our build is getting underway at Barnes Hospital!
It’s been a busy few months since our last update in July, when we marked the official groundbreaking.
Since then, work on site has continued in stages, as we move steadily from the final enabling works into the main construction phase of this important redevelopment. |

As a reminder, our joint £30 million scheme with the Department for Education will deliver a modern NHS community mental health facility for the borough of Richmond, alongside a purpose-built special educational needs school operated by the Beckmead Trust. Works led by our main contactor Willmott Dixon will now progress in earnest through to summer 2027, with our new facilities scheduled to open from autumn that year.

Meanwhile on the other side of the site, residential developer LS Estates are due to begin removal of the derelict buildings there – they informed us this week that this will begin from Monday (17 November).
Together this will mean more activity on site in the coming months than at any point so far. We know how important it is to keep disruption to a minimum for those living and working near the hospital. Our construction partners continue to implement measures to manage noise, dust and traffic, with clearly defined working hours in place and regular monitoring to ensure compliance. We are grateful for the patience and understanding of our neighbours as this work continues.
Community engagement remains at the heart of this project. Willmott Dixon have run a number of ‘Digger Days’ inviting local schools to visit the site and learn more about their work. And in recent months we have been discussing some exciting community engagement projects including an NHS-led proposal to develop a community art programme to help bring the new Barnes Hospital to life, just as we did at Springfield Hospital in Wandsworth.
We also continue to engage with local residents, carers, patients and voluntary and community sector partners through our regular forums. As mentioned above, our next community engagement forum will take place on the evening of Wednesday 3 December from 6-7pm at Mortlake Hall. This will be another opportunity to hear updates from the partners and ask questions about the development.
Thank you again for all your support and we hope to see you at our forum next month. |
