Next phase of redevelopment at Warminster

We’re pleased to share that demolition has now begun at Alcock Crest in Warminster, marking the start of our plans to bring new, high-quality affordable homes to the area. This follows our difficult decision last year to redevelop the Alcock Crest and Westleigh flats, after detailed investigations showed the buildings, dating back to the 1950s and 60s, were beyond repair. Find out more about how the decision was made — with insight from the people involved and what it means for the future of the project — in this video.

Since then, all customers living in the blocks have been successfully rehoused, and we’ve been working closely with local residents on the future of these sites. In January, we shared our redevelopment proposals at a community consultation event, and we were pleased to hear valuable feedback from those who attended.

The plans include 14 new affordable homes at Alcock Crest, and 4 at Westleigh. All properties will be energy-efficient with high levels of insulation and solar panels – helping to lower both carbon emissions and energy bills. Demolition work at Alcock Crest is expected to take around eight weeks, before moving to Westleigh in October, with both sites cleared by Christmas.

Once planning permission is approved, we aim to start building the new homes in spring 2026. These new homes are part of our ongoing commitment to provide local and affordable homes that are safe and secure.

Foundations for the future

Now more than ever, we understand just how vital a home is, especially in the face of the growing housing shortage. That’s why Selwood Housing is investing in building 1700 new local affordable homes by 2033.

We have invested over £11 million to be able to deliver 56 of these homes at Platinum Place, Elizabeth Way, Hilperton! This is a developer-led site, and Barretts are the builder. There are 34 affordable rented homes and 22 shared ownership homes. This is a mix of family houses, bungalows and maisonettes. Our first eleven homes are under construction and well on their way to being completed in October and November this year, with four for rent, and seven available for shared ownership. More of our homes will be delivered on this site next year, and each year following until 2028.

Paul Walsh, Selwood Housing's group development director, and Nikki Townshend, development project manager, were on site viewing progress recently. The homes come with many features that will bring down running costs for residents, with plenty of benefit to the wider environment. These include:

  • PV panels - these will help reduce electric bills and reduce the homes' carbon footprint.

  • Under floor insulation - increased insulation under the floor to reduce heat loss. This minimises heat escaping into the ground, and gives better thermal comfort, helping to keep bills down.

  • Insulation in the roof and walls - materials in the insulation offer excellent thermal resistance, again reducing heat loss in cold and warm seasons.

  • Double glazed windows filled with argon - the windows and lintels improve thermal performance, reducing heat loss and giving enhanced sound insulation.

  • Rain gardens - used as an initiative to collect the rainwater that runs off hard surfaces. Rain gardens are considered to be low maintenance whilst helping to support local wildlife.

The wider development will deliver 238 new trees planted, new grassland, bird and bat boxes, a play area and an attenuation pond, providing a new habitat for amphibians!

In the next six months, Selwood Housing is delivering over 140 more local, affordable homes in Trowbridge, Bratton, Chippenham, Frome, Malmesbury, Warminster, Melksham, Westbury and Radstock.

Gas safety week

Gas Safety Week was 8 - 14 September, and it's a great reminder to stay on top of gas safety in your home. Faulty appliances can lead to gas leaks, fires, or carbon monoxide poisoning – which can be deadly.

We carry out free annual gas checks to help keep you safe. Don’t ignore warning signs like unusual flames, strange boiler noises or a beeping carbon monoxide alarm.

Stay safe and find out more about how to protect your home and loved ones on our website.
