EXETER COLLEGE ALUMNI NEWSLETTER

Montage of photos of various alumni

Hello from Exeter College.

Welcome to this latest edition of the Exeter College alumni newsletter.

We hope you are enjoying the summer and, hopefully, some good weather. The 2024-25 academic year ended on a high here at College, with many of our staff and students attending award ceremonies and end of year celebrations.

Attendees at our Academic Awards in July welcomed College alumnus, Dr Andrew Seaton, as their guest speaker. Andrew spoke about his journey to Exeter College and the impact staff and the learning environment had on his education and his life. Andrew is now a lecturer in modern history at University College London and is currently researching for his next publication 'The Ends of Coal' which addresses the legacies of the British coal industry. You can read more about Andrew below.

We hope you enjoy this update and thank you for being part of our Exeter College community.

While College learners are taking a break for the summer and staff take stock and prepare for another academic year ahead, we look back at the highlights from 2024-25 in this short video.

Ten Tors tradition continues

Four College teams entered the Ten Tors Challenge in mid May, with two 45-mile and two 55-mile teams. After a weekend of unexpected mixed weather, the teams made it home successfully to cheers, a medal and a pasty! The College is immensely proud of the heroic efforts shown by all our students both in preparing for and being part of this event.

A SPOTLIGHT ON DR ANDREW SEATON

Photo of Dr Andrew Seaton

Dr Andrew Seaton came to Exeter College in 2006 to study Fast Track GCSEs. Andrew had been largely home-educated through his secondary school years as a consequence of family housing issues and his College course gave him support, structure and access to facilities, resources and opportunities that helped him progress to A Level studies, and ultimately to an undergraduate degree at the University of Oxford. Today, as well as being a modern historian, Andrew also volunteers to support students from similar backgrounds to enter higher education.

"I remember the value of having a programme like Fast Track that supports people who didn't have their qualifications or hadn't followed a normal pathway. And being at College was such a fantastic, life-changing thing for me to do."
