New public art on campus
Continuing a tradition of public art on campus, West Slope will feature a new installation on Sussex Lawns, a green space at the heart of the development. Design concepts from five shortlisted artists are on display in the Library from Monday 19 May to Sunday 1 June. Come along and see the artists’ visions for our next artwork and share your thoughts on the proposals.

The new Health and Wellbeing Centre has reached a new milestone – internal fit out has started! The main structure of Newick House is now complete and the building is watertight, so work to build internal walls and install utilities has started, and we expect to be adding fixtures and fittings over the winter. Colour scheme for West Slope accommodation agreed
The final colours of our new West Slope student accommodation rooms have been agreed. Head over to our photo gallery to see an example of how the final rooms will look.
West Slope is also in full bloom. Watch the latest drone footage from over the construction site to see the green tree line weaving through the centre of the development, helping to re-establish Dame Sylvia Crowe’s landscape vision for our original campus.
Making recycling simpler and more effectiveWe’re changing the way we recycle across campus by expanding the range of items that can go in mixed recycling bins, and by introducing food waste collections in staff kitchens and all our cafés.
From 6 May, food waste caddies are being rolled out across suitable office kitchens. These will be emptied regularly, and the contents processed into renewable energy through anaerobic digestion. Around a third of the waste we generate on campus is food waste, so this will save tonnes of food from going to the incinerator or to landfill.

Reverse vending machines have been introduced on campus for the first time. In fact, we now have more of them than any other UK university! You simply feed them your empty plastic bottles and drinks cans to receive a ticket in return.
We aim to recycle half of all our waste on campus by the end of 2025; at the moment we recycle about a third of it. The machines will help get our campus community into the habit of recycling by rewarding us for doing so and will also help us monitor the amount being recycled.

Planning permission to carry out RAAC (Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete) related improvement works in Arts A has now been granted, meaning we are now able to scope the works needed. For a full update on all our RAAC impacted buildings, read our latest update on the Staff Hub.
Preparing for our new Facilities Management contractors
The mobilisation process for our new Facilities Management (FM) contract is now well underway. OCS will replace Mitie within the SEF partnership on 1 July, and a team from OCS are now on campus preparing for a smooth transition, transferring data and setting up IT and HR processes. Three engagement sessions with OCS were held in April and University staff were invited to come along, ask questions, and hear more about the benefits of the new contract. A separate session was held for SEF colleagues, who will receive further, service-specific information over the coming weeks.
