Local Nature Recovery Strategy

 Foreword from Councillor Blake Pain
Lead member for the Environment and the Green Agenda

We want to hear your views on an ambitious new plan to make more space for nature across Leicestershire, Leicester, and Rutland.

The Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) launched on Monday 6 January, and it’s all about protecting and restoring nature by improving habitats and boosting biodiversity.

The draft strategy was developed by us here at Leicestershire County Council and our partners, and aims to tackle some big environmental challenges while supporting local people and their livelihoods.

The consultation is open until Friday 28 February, and we want to hear from you. Whether you're a resident, farmer, landowner, or part of a local group, your thoughts on the draft strategy are crucial.

Have your say and help us to make space for nature

Making Space for Nature in Leicestershire, Liecester & Rutland Leicestershire County Council image

Here’s just some of the things the LNRS covers:

  • A look at how we can tackle habitat loss, shrinking wildlife populations, and the effects of climate change

  • Priorities for protecting the habitats and species that need the most help

  • Practical actions to create a healthier, more connected natural environment

  • How to give nature the space it needs to thrive—while balancing this with people’s needs and livelihoods

The draft strategy has been shaped with input from local councils, environmental groups, farmers, and community members. It also highlights key habitats—like woodlands, wetlands, and urban green spaces—and species that need urgent attention.

When do the LNRS events take place?

We’ve organised four in-person sessions to give you an opportunity to learn more about the LNRS, ask questions, and share your thoughts.

These events are open to everyone, whether you’re a local resident, community leader, business owner, or just someone passionate about nature and the environment. However, we advise people to register their interest for the in-person sessions, so that we know how many people are likely to attend.

The sessions will include a presentation, a Q&A and an opportunity at the end to speak to the presenter.

The first takes place on Thursday 13 February, (7pm-9pm), at the Symington Building in Market Harborough, and the second is on Monday 17 February, (7pm-9pm), at Loughborough Town Hall. A third will take place on Tuesday 18 February, (7pm-9pm) at Bishop Street Methodist Church in Leicester city centre, while the fourth takes place in the Rutland County Council Chamber from 2.30pm-4pm on Tuesday 25 February.

The online sessions take place on Tuesday 11 February (6.30pm-7.30pm), Tuesday 18 February (4pm-5pm) and Tuesday 25 February (1pm-2pm and 6.30pm-7.30pm).

More information and registration for the in-person or online briefing sessions can be found by clicking on the below button.

When you have your say in the consultation, your feedback will help shape the final version of the strategy, set to be published this summer.

By working together, we can give nature a helping hand and create a better, more sustainable future for everyone.

So, what are you waiting for? Take a look at the strategy and share your ideas before 28 February! Let’s make Leicestershire, Leicester, and Rutland better place for both nature and people —together.
