EXETER COLLEGE ALUMNI NEWSLETTER

Welcome to this summer edition of the Exeter College alumni newsletter.

June marked Pride Month and an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of the Stonewall riots that took place in the US in 1969. These riots set in motion changes for gay rights in America and around the world.

Read on to learn more about College alumnus, Hugo Greenhalgh, who in 1993 took the British Government to the European Court of Human Rights to challenge the disparity in the legal age of consent for homosexual couples. His is a story of courage and perseverance and we are delighted to celebrate the recent publication of his book, The Diaries of Mr Lucas: Notes from a Lost Gay Life. Read on for more.

Wishing you a wonderful summer and, as ever, thank you for being part of our Exeter College community!

Silas Welsh studied Geology, Physics, Theatre Studies and Music A Levels, graduating from Exeter College in 2017. Since then Silas has maintained links with the Nepalese school previously supported by the College, with fundraising through various projects between 2017 and the present day. With the Olympics soon to get underway in Paris, College alumnus, Ollie Payne, is in the midst of preparations for his part in the competition as goalkeeper of the men's hockey team. This is the second time Ollie will be representing Great Britain at an Olympic Games, having played at the Tokyo Games in 2020. We wish Ollie, current student Jess Buchanan, and the rest of the GB Team the best of luck!

HUGO'S STORY

“I didn’t understand the law. I couldn’t walk down the street holding my boyfriend’s hand at 16, in case I got arrested. It was ludicrous."

Hugo Greenhalgh studied A Levels in Maths, English and Russian between 1989-1991. During this time he was also the College's nominated Gay Officer, taking an active role in representing the LGBTQ+ community at NUS conferences and more locally. Hugo's political activism eventually led to his campaign to lower the gay age of consent, culminating in a landmark change to the law in 1994. Now a freelance journalist and writer, Hugo continues to shine a light on important LGBTQ+ stories and other political matters.
