Welcome to this latest edition of the Exeter College alumni e-newsletter.

This newsletter comes to you just ahead of Mental Health Awareness Week, and the nationwide agenda to focus on attaining good mental health. This year's campaign promotes the benefits of movement and the positive impact this can have on our mental wellbeing.

The newsletter also showcases the story of one of our talented alumni, Jayde Perkin, who used her art as a vehicle for coping with the effects of grief. Read on to learn more about her story and the way she has continued to use her work to support others navigating a similar path.

Thank you for being part of our Exeter College community.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

Photo of Richard, studying Level 4 HNC Civil Engineering

"The staff did open their arms and supported me in many ways to get to where I am now. Exeter College is way ahead in many fields: wellbeing, support, understanding, classes, flexibility, technology, engaging with students, events, and premises."

Richard started out studying the Level 1 in Business, then the Level 2 in Engineering, and progressed to a fully-funded Level 3 BTEC in Civil Engineering, alongside which he studied for his GCSEs in English and Maths.

Richard is now working for the Exeter branch of the civil engineering company WSP whilst he continues training, now studying for his Level 4 HNC in Civil Engineering at Exeter College.

JAYDE'S STORY

Jayde Perkin came to Exeter College in 2009 to study the Art Foundation course. She described the course as a turning point in solidifying her love of art as a form of expression, and went on to pursue this passion, studying Illustration at university. It was the publication of the children’s picture book, Mum’s Jumper, which looks at grief, that really put Jayde on the map; and her vibrant and expressionistic illustrations have since continued to earn her plaudits and prizes on the national stage.

Art is amazing as a tool to be able to share and create this community in order to open up conversations. One of the things about art is that it’s always there; as an artist it’s your voice, but it’s an amazing platform to bring people in for a shared experience.
