Weekly news

19th May
2023

Dear ,

Welcome to your weekly Cathedral news! Here's what you'll find in this week's edition:

What's new in the Shop

This week I'm pleased to share details about two lovely new ranges now on sale in our Shop.

Wren 300 'Polymath'

For Wren 300, this new 'Polymath' range has been designed by Product of Your Environment to celebrate the many talents of Sir Christopher Wren. There's a 100% cotton tote bag with a design inspired by the spiral of the Geometric Staircase, and a set of 6 foil printed pencils, which individually read: 'Architect', 'Designer', 'Scientist', 'Inventor', 'Thinker', 'Polymath'. There are also metal and enamel badges featuring the same.

&repeat X St Paul's Cathedral

The &repeat X St Paul's Cathedral range is a colourful new addition, featuring a repeating Cathedral design in blue and orange. There's a tote bag, tea towel and cushion cover, all made in the UK, and a mug (made in Stoke-on-Trent). There are also dark and milk chocolate bars with the new designs, too. These are manufactured by a company based in York who sustainably source their cocoa, partnering with an agricultural cooperative who support farmers to buy more land and provide job training. They have eliminated 98% of their single use plastics – our bars are wrapped in foil with a paper sleeve featuring the new design.

Head over to the Shop and see them all for yourself!

New series: Get to know your colleagues

This week we begin a new ongoing series all about us. This will be a lovely way to get to know a little more about colleagues - both in terms of the work they do, and what they do when they're not at work, too. I'm begging your indulgence this week as I'm starting this series with a profile about myself - well, we had to start somewhere!

Laura Callan, Internal Communications and Digital Manager

I first joined the Cathedral in February 2021, and I'm responsible for the Cathedral’s marketing and social media channels, as well as our website (together with our small but mighty team of web editors and digital champions) and this weekly newsletter, too.

My role is about effectively promoting and celebrating everything we do here at the Cathedral to attract more visitors, but it’s also about engaging with our different audiences in the digital realm.

Before St Paul’s, I worked as a freelance marketing and communications consultant and copywriter, and I’ve worked in marketing and communications for about 8 years; at a small historic house, a visual arts education charity and for the National Trust. I’m also a Trustee of the Spode Museum Trust in Stoke-on-Trent.

I grew up in the Staffordshire Moorlands on the edge of the beautiful Peak District. At university I studied History and Archaeology, and then I went back again and studied for a Master of Research specialising in eighteenth century social history, which I also sometimes lectured on to undergraduate students, too.

I currently live in Surrey, and in my spare time you’ll most likely find me at my allotment attempting to grow fruit, veg and flowers with varying degrees of success!

Finally, a book, TV/radio show film or podcast recommendation from me is the podcast series ‘You Must Remember This’. It’s a storytelling podcast exploring the secret and/or forgotten histories of Hollywood’s first century. The episodes are meticulously researched and beautifully told – I really cannot recommend highly enough.

Over to you!

Now it's over to you. If you'd like to be featured, then simply complete this online form and I'll be in touch!

All Staff meeting date change

Everyone should have already received an Outlook calendar notification earlier this week about a change of date for our next All Staff meeting. To confirm, the meeting originally scheduled for Wednesday 7th June will not take place.

This has now been rescheduled for Wednesday 28th June, 9-10am in the OBE Chapel. Refreshments will be served in the Crypt from 8.45am as usual, and an agenda will follow in the coming weeks.

Executive Assistant to the Dean appointment

Congratulations to Tiggy Sawbridge, who was successful in her application for the role of Executive Assistant to the Dean, and who joins the St Paul’s team on a permanent basis. Tiggy first joined earlier this year as Interim PA to the Dean, and was previously PA to the Canons at Westminster Abbey for 8 years. Outside of work, Tiggy enjoys yoga and walking, and sings with the City of London Choir.

Information about Ride London

Ride London is coming to the city on Sunday 28th May, and we've been in contact with the organisers who have let us know that there will be road closures in the area from 5am. They also have a full list of our Sunday services in order to keep noise to a minimum, and have also let us know they are finishing from 3pm and packing away afterwards. Find out more, including road closures, vehicle crossing points and pedestrian areas on their website.

And finally...

Listen to our Schools & Family Learning team on podcast Activity Quest's latest episode, which is all about Christopher Wren, our new exhibition - and climbing the Dome. Amazing!
