Weekly news

5th April
2023

Dear ,

Welcome to our Cathedral news. Here's what you'll find in this week's issue:

Messy Cathedral 2023

If you were at the Cathedral on Saturday morning you’ll have seen that we were joined by hundreds more children than usual! Our first Messy Cathedral since 2019 was a huge success, with over 400 children and 300+ adults joining us to take part in craft activities, Tom’s scratch choir, and ending with the Messy Eucharist.

Lots of very happy feedback included the following:

  • ‘It was fantastic. The crafts were brilliant as were the craft staff. The venue was welcoming and the Choir Master was brilliant. We can't wait to come next year.’

  • 'Was lovely - thank you so much...such generous and thoughtful activities - was really grateful to feel relaxed in the Cathedral with my children.’

  • ‘We absolutely loved the Choir Master and his enthusiasm. We felt part of a choir and his generosity to lead a scratch 'St Paul's Cathedral Choir' at the Eucharist was very much appreciated. He was energetic and encouraging. Many congratulations. It was a real privilege to be able to sing with the organist and pianist and enjoy such a great atmosphere and event...’

  • 'My son, aged 8, enjoyed the palm leaf colouring and 'magic' when floated in water. I loved the scratch choir - brilliantly taught and wonderful in the Crypt. My son secretly enjoyed it...but not as much as me.’

A visit from Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England

Andrew Bailey, Governor of the Bank of England, visited the Cathedral on Monday 3rd April as part of his engagement with organisations across the City and around the country. After an initial conversation which centred around our recovery following the pandemic and the trends we are seeing this year, the Dean, together with Cathedral colleagues led Andrew in a tour, which took in the Library, Geometric Staircase, Trophy Room and the North Portico.

IT update: Using 8x8 and Microsoft Teams

8x8 or Teams, which should you use?

The IT department has now installed the new MS Office software and apps onto staff laptops and desktops. Those with phone numbers would have been using either a physical handset, the 8x8 app, Microsoft Teams, or all three!

To reduce confusion, the decision has been made that the only phone app that needs to be used is Teams, as it ties perfectly in with our Cathedral collaboration.

The IT team will be removing 8x8 apps from desktops and laptops over the coming weeks. If you have the 8x8 app on your mobile phone, we ask that you now please remove it, and instead download and login to the Microsoft Teams app.

Teams can be installed from the App Store on an iPhone, or from the Google Play Store on an Android (e.g. Samsung) mobile phone. If you need any help with this, please contact the IT department via the Helpdesk.

Keeping silence on the Cathedral Floor for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday

As Maundy Thursday (April 6th) draws closer, here is a gentle reminder to everyone about keeping silence on the Cathedral Floor from the end of the evening Maundy Thursday service and for the whole of Good Friday. This is the most solemn time of year in the Church calendar, as we remember the death of of Jesus on the Cross.
