Hi ,
As the Managing Director of NewZapp, you probably won’t speak to me much on the phone or via email/Teams. With the latest version of NewZapp, our 9th major release, rolling out 2 weeks ago I wanted to speak to as many of our customers as possible to understand how this new version was making their comms messages easier to get out.
You spend a lot of time carefully crafting the copy and images only for it to look not quite how you intended when you send through a proof to yourself or your colleagues. There are so many different email readers, and they all work ever so slightly differently. If there is a bug in NewZapp we’ll fix it but sometimes it’s down to the nuances of the email reader. And yes Outlook, I’m talking about you!
Outlook uses MS Word to format its emails. Yes, that’s right, it uses a program designed to write printed letters to render HTML inside an email. As a result, it is not rare to find a few faults when sending HTML emails into Outlook inboxes.
Because of how Outlook formats its emails, bullet points appear compressed within an Outlook inbox.
This can be irritating after spending lots of time and effort crafting a beautiful email and it then doesn’t look right in all inboxes.
The below shows how a bulleted list will appear inside NewZapp’s editor compared to what it will look like when it arrives in Outlook. Ouch! Thanks Outlook. Thankfully, there is a solution to this to help make your emails look exactly as you intended. | |

Outlook bullet lists | Click on the text block containing the bullet point, then click view source.
It will be easier if you have your bullet points within a separate block from your normal text. | | Now you need to change the line spacing within the left menu, by doing so you will see that the code has changed to something like this: | | Now you need to remove '<p style="line-height: x%;">'
as well as the '</p>' that appears after the white text.
Ensure you do not delete the 'white text' | | Once removed adjust the line spacing again and you will end up with something like this: | | You can now freely adjust line spacing and have what is previewed be what appears within Outlook inboxes.
You may find it useful to save this bullet list as a module so you do not need to make adjustments to the code in the future. |
