Weekly news

10th March
2023

Dear ,

In this week's newsletter, you will find:

The Loyal Addresses by Privileged Bodies

Yesterday (9th March) was an exciting and historic day for the Cathedral, as the Dean and several colleagues went to Buckingham Palace. The occasion was the Presentation of Loyal Addresses by Privileged Bodies, where organisations with a close association with the Crown made a Loyal Address to The King to mark His Majesty’s Accession. We are one of 27 Privileged Bodies closely associated with the Crown, who retain the right to present a ‘Loyal Address’ on occasions of particular moment in the monarch’s life.

Colleagues who attended were a representative group reflecting our Cathedral staff, casuals and volunteers, from our Cathedral Enterprises and the Cathedral School, all with differing lengths of service and responsibilities. Our Head Chorister, Harry Gorick was the youngest attendee of all attendees from the 27 Privileged Bodies. Those in attendance were:

  • The Very Reverend Andrew Tremlett, Dean

  • Canon Dr Paula Gooder, Chancellor

  • Clement Hutton-Mills, Lay Canon

  • Michael Dove, Mason and General Foreman

  • Carris Jones, Vicar Choral

  • Alice Bray, Visitor Experience Assistant

  • Terence Richards, Casual Assistant and Volunteer

  • Duncan Smith, Head of Commercial Services - Enterprises

  • Alastair Harris, Deputy Bursar – Cathedral School

  • Marcia Cardoso Ferreira, Teaching Assistant – Cathedral School

  • Harry Gorick, Head Chorister – Cathedral School

Celebratory reception

It was wonderful to see so many volunteers and staff gathering together in the Crypt for afternoon tea, and the chance to celebrate such an important day. It was also an important day for different reasons for Andrew, our Dean, and for Volunteer Guide Chris Allen: it was their birthday, which was duly marked with a melodic rendition of Happy Birthday, and more cake. Happy belated birthday, Chris and Andrew!

Many thanks to everyone who helped make yesterday such a lovely occasion: Nicholas Salmon, Millie Walker and Sam Dove for impeccable and thoughtful organisation and coordination.

Thanks also to Graham Lacdao and Sandra Lynes-Timbrell for their photography this week!

Latest Heads of Department and Chapter updates

Heads of Department (HoDs) and Chapter meet twice a year to look at business planning and operational oversight. Here are some updates from last week’s meeting:

  • Two representatives from Ecclesiastical Insurance led a discussion about risk management, including incorporating an approach that embeds risk management into culture and across departments; considering risks beyond insurable risks or compliance

  • Over the break, departing Chapter member Pim Baxter ran a fun arts-based quiz for attendees which all appreciated!

  • The final session of the morning was led by Emily MacKenzie, COO, who helped attendees think about what good corporate decision making looks like and how Chapter can delegate decision making effectively to boards, committees, SLT, HoDs and managers

Chapter and HoDs shared a sandwich lunch on terrace of Sarasin & Partners before Chapter returned to the Chapter House for their meeting, which included:

  • Updates on operations, progress on implementing the Cathedrals Measure, and an update on the Girls Voices project

  • Approving recommendations from the Nominations Committee regarding plans to recruit new Chapter members and other governance board members

  • Surveyor to the Fabric, Oliver Caroe, attended and spoke to Chapter about various City planning applications

  • Peter Spindler, Chair of the Safeguarding Advisory Group, presented the annual safeguarding report, highlighting the progress made across the year

Job vacancy

Virger
Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week
Salary: £29,932 per annum

We are now recruiting for the role of Virger; someone who is passionate about welcoming visitors to St Paul’s Cathedral; whether they come to attend worship or to view this important, historic landmark.

The Virgers support the delivery of mission and ministry at the Cathedral. They prepare for and assist with services alongside the Cathedral Clergy including administering the chalice at services of Holy Communion (Eucharist). They provide a point of contact for visitors attending services or requiring pastoral support. The Virgers also work closely with other teams from across the Cathedral to ensure safe, smooth running of events and services and the proper  care of the Cathedral fabric and collections.

The closing date for applications is Friday 17th March.

Reminders: Pension clinics and Maundy Thursday

  • Pension clinics: There will be pension clinics taking place throughout the year on Wednesday 15th March, Thursday 22nd June and Friday 6th October. To book your free session (completely confidential and individual) please email @AskHR@stpaulscathedral.org.uk

  • Every year on Maundy Thursday, the Dean washes the feet of 12 members of our Cathedral community. At the Last Supper, Jesus washed the disciples' feet as an act of service. Recreating this act is a reminder of how Jesus served others, and of how Christians are to behave towards others. If you would like to take part, and would be willing to have your feet washed during the 5pm Sung Eucharist on Thursday 6th April, please get in touch with James Milne, our Precentor. If you are interested but would like to know a little more about what is involved before committing, please do not hesitate to get in touch with James to find out more.

And finally...

Head over to the Oxo Gallery to see Deaf Mosaic, a free photography exhibition by Stephen Iliffe, exploring and celebrating the lives of deaf people. Closer to the Cathedral, you'll also be able to enjoy our staff art exhibition 'Cryptic Cathedral' beside the Concorde Lounge from Monday 13th until Friday 31st March.

I will be on annual leave for a few days from Wednesday next week, so your Friday news will be sent by the Chancellor instead. If anybody does have anything they would like to include, on both mine and Paula's behalf, please send over to internalcomms@stpaulscathedral.org.uk by Wednesday at the latest.

With very best wishes,
Laura
