WESSEX ROUTE: STAKEHOLDER NEWSLETTER
Introduction
Welcome to the November newsletter for the Wessex route at Network Rail.

We are part way through another challenging month in 2020 for the Southern region and the whole country in the form of another lockdown. We remain steadfast in our work to make sure that we keep the railway open and operational for passengers that need us to get to work.

Passenger numbers have dropped off during the last week or so following Government announcements but we're continuing to make improvements right across the network.

As ever - if you have any questions you would like to raise, please get in touch with the stakeholder team, contact details are at the bottom of this newsletter.
Wessex: news on the route

Advance notice of Christmas engineering work

The line between Basingstoke and Salisbury will be closed from Christmas Day 2020 to Sunday 3 January 2021 while we carry out essential maintenance.

Specialist teams will remove overgrown vegetation between Whitchurch and Andover, improving reliability by reducing common causes of delays such as fallen trees, branches and leaves.

In Andover, work will take place to strengthen Millway Road overbridge. By strengthening the structure's steel, installing a new concrete deck and repairing brickwork, the bridge will be able to continue supporting road traffic for years to come.

South Western Railway services between London Waterloo and Exeter St Davids will start and terminate at Salisbury with buses replacing trains between Basingstoke and Salisbury.

Accessibility progress across Wessex

The CP6 Access for All schemes at Barnes, Isleworth, Stoneleigh and Motspur Park are running to schedule. The option selection reports for each station have now been finalised and approved, with positive conversations also having taken place with local councils. These four schemes will now move into the outline design stage, which is due to be completed by March 2022. The fifth Access for All scheme at Motspur Park is also progressing to programme and is due to complete its own option selection report process prior to March 2021.

Science Based Targets

On Thursday 29 October, we were delighted to become the first railway organisation in the world to commit to an ambitious emission cutting target. Our goals have been independently approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative, and are in line with the Paris Agreement, an international treaty to reduce global greenhouse gases.

We have made impressive progress already, with all of the energy used to power our stations, depots and offices coming from renewable sources. Moving forward we are looking forward to working with our wider supply chain, to help them cut their own emissions and support our mission.

Supporting Pompey

We will be undertaking vital strengthening work on the 144 year old viaduct supporting Portsmouth and Southsea station. The structure known as Landport Viaduct was built in 1876, it is supported by 17 spans, seven will be strengthened in January and the rest at a later date.

Work will commence on Monday 18 January and over a week our engineers will bolster the Victorian Railway structure. In a separate project a few miles down the road, new track will be laid and a bridge rebuilt near Cosham.

Contactless donation points prove a success

Network Rail have recently invested in a range of new measures to tackle homelessness across our London stations. We worked in collaboration with TAP London, a non-profit organisation, to create contactless donation points at London Bridge and Clapham Junction, the first stations in the UK to introduce such technology.

Each tap donates £3 to help the coalition of 29 charities that are supported by TAP, with over £5,000 raised so far, a fantastic achievement. Southern station staff have also partnered with charity StreetLink, using apps to record and refer homeless people to places where they can receive the help and support they need.

Bashed Bridges

A new, Network Rail led campaign to reduce the number of costly bridge strikes was launched recently. New figures realised show railway bridges are struck five times every day on average across Britain, which causes almost half a million minutes of delays.

To reduce these accidents from happening, we are introducing a 'Wise Up, Size Up' message to petrol stations across our routes, with posters reminding drivers of large vehicles to check their routes before setting off, in addition to forming a Bridge Strike Prevention Group with Highways England and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.

Wessex improvement work continues

Over the past month our work to make every journey better has continued across the Wessex region. We installed 647 yards of rail at New Milton in addition to removing graffiti in Branksome and Parkstone. At Southampton we have renewed two sets of points and installed new track on the freight lines of Southampton Western Docks and Millbrook, allowing freight trains to run at higher speeds through the area.

There has been supplementary work at Millbrook station, with the construction of a temporary footbridge to continue access to the station's island platform whilst we renew the existing permanent footbridge. Our investment in the Wessex region is set to continue as we continue our campaign to put all passengers first.
