Spring 2018 marks ten years since the re-opening of the University's art gallery, following a major redevelopment and expansion. Raise a glass of wine to celebrate the remarkable efforts made to create a public space for the University of Leeds Art Collection, and track the gallery's evolution into The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery through the art on display in new exhibition Transformation.

Join University of Leeds Poetry Centre in celebrating the launch of the Verse Matters anthology, with readings by some of the contributors. The anthology aims to harness the power of everyday, human stories in times of inequality and xenophobia. The book, edited by Helen Mort and Rachel Bower, is published by Scarborough's Valley Press.

Join ULITA an Archive of International Textiles, for an opening reception to celebrate its new exhibition Resists: exploring resist-dyed textiles across cultures. The drop-in event will be preceded at 5pm by a free talk at M&S Company Archive by researcher, designer and educator Dr Kate Wells, exploring how hand techniques, technology and innovation unite in the history of resist-patterned fabrics across the world. The exhibition is open until 13 December.

#AlgoraveAssembly is a day that brings together invited speakers and performers operating at the forefront of the Algorave scene, with keynote speakers, panel discussion, live coding masterclasses for Year 12 pupils, and a free lunchtime Concert Hall performance to showcase the latest developments in this emerging form of musical practice. The day, organised by the School of Music with Leeds Digital Festival, concludes with a spectacular livestreamed algorave (an event allowing people to dance to music generated by computer algorithms programmed live), in the School's new Concert Hall Foyer venue.

LSTwo, the School of Music's new music ensemble conducted by Dr Mic Spencer, will perform a concert showcasing the compositional and performance talent of students, postgraduate researchers and staff in the School of Music. Newly-written work has been composed especially for this year's line-up, including a premiere by Dr Scott McLaughlin.

Starting at ULITA, discover traditional methods of resist dye pattern making from across West Africa, India and Indonesia. The session then continues at the nearby M&S Company Archive to see how these craft techniques have been adapted and used in high street fashion.

Brenda is 16 and pregnant, Amy is the first in her family to go to university. What could possibly go wrong? This new verbatim play explores the struggles that young working class women face, and recognises the difficulties of trying to study and to be a mother. Bloomin' Buds aim to raise awareness of the struggles and pressures these women face, and question whether the systems in place such as universal credit are really enough in the current political and economic climate.

The Gould Piano Trio is joined by German Flautist, Uwe Grodd for the premier of his new edition of Beethoven's 'Pastorale' Symphony arranged for flute, violin, cello and piano by Mozart's star student, Johann Nepomuk Hummel. This chamber music 'translation' of the symphony reflects Beethoven's love for nature in the same way as in the original.

Arts & Cultural News A new partnership between the University and Ilkley Literature Festival

The University has a new partnership with the North's oldest and largest literature festival. As well as becoming Higher Education Partner for Ilkley Literature Festival (28 September - 14 October), the University is principal partner for its off-shoot Words in the City poetry and spoken word festival, which for the first time takes place in Leeds this year (10-13 May). As well as a free reading by Professor of Poetry Simon Armitage on Friday 11 May, there is also a chance to explore the University's extensive archive of poetry recordings at the Poetry Sound Lounge at Carriageworks Theatre on Saturday 12 May.

Arts & Cultural News University partnership extends the global reach of Leeds International Piano Competition |

A renewed partnership between the University and one of the world's leading piano competitions will significantly extended the global reach of 'The Leeds'. The University has been involved since the competition's earliest days, with heats and events hosted on campus since the inaugural contest in 1963. Now, the first ever overseas round of the competition are currently taking place in Berlin, New York and Singapore.

As part of its programme of expanding activities, the Leeds International Piano Competition is presenting the first of what is to be an annual Leeds Piano Festival, to take place in May 2018 in Leeds and London. It features distinguished past winners and alumni of the competition Lars Vogt, Alessio Bax and Sunwook Kim. There will also be appearances by three Young Scholars of the Lang Lang International Music Foundation. Three of the Scholars will come to work in an extensive programme of outreach both in Leeds and London.
