Don't put everything in the recycling bin this Christmas. Less really is more |
After the presents are unwrapped and the turkey is eaten, we all have extra packaging and rubbish to get rid of. Typically, we generate more than 25% more waste over Christmas, and most of us try to recycle as much as possible. However, if the wrong items are put into your grey bin, it can contaminate the other recyclables items in there, reducing the total that can actually be recycled. Apart from the loss to the environment, it also costs taxpayers' money, leaving less to spend on the vital services we all rely on. By following these simple tips, you can get your recycling right this Christmas: 1. Put all food waste in the black binTurkey carcasses, and numerous other food stuffs, can wrongly end up in the recycling. Any food waste causes major problems, so please put it all in your black bin, not your grey recycling bin. 2. Glossy wrapping paper and glittery cards go in the black binGlossy, shiny or embellished wrapping paper may look recyclable but all these types of wrapping paper and cards should go straight in the black bin. 3. Cardboard packaging/brown paper is perfect when kept clean and dryIn the run-up to Christmas, we often end up with loads of cardboard boxes. These are perfect to put in the recycling, but please keep them clean and dry. It also helps to break them up to make more space in your recycling bin. 4. Bin the plastic carrier bagsPlastic carrier bags and similar items clog up the system at the facility where your recycling is separated, so please put them in the black bin. 5. Disposing of disposablesDirty paper cups, plates and napkins aren't recyclable, neither are used paper towels. If you are using disposable tableware, it should go in the black bin when you've finished with it. Finally, if you're not sure if something can be recycled, please put it in your black bin rather than risk contaminating the other waste. Glass bottles/ jars can be recycled at bottle banks, more information on these can be found hereFor more information about recycling in East Lindsey, go to: https://www.e-lindsey.gov.uk/Waste.
Residents reminded to check their bin collection schedule for Christmas and New Year period |
Residents are being reminded to check their bin collection schedule for the Christmas and New Year period. Households collected on behalf of East Lindsey District Council by Boston Borough Council in Friskney, Wainfleet, Little Steeping, East Keal and parts of Coningsby will have their bins collected on December 23 instead of December 25. Residents can check their details online here Those without internet access can call 01507 601111 or visit your local Community Access Point.

Council increases support available for businesses in East Lincolnshire |
New and existing businesses looking to invest in East Lincolnshire can now access support more easily from East Lindsey District Council, as the Authority launches a range of services to help boost growth and create jobs by encouraging investment in the district. Underpinned by the recently launched Invest East Lincolnshire brand, the new services focus on ensuring that businesses that wish to invest in the area can access the information and support they require from the Council to take investment decisions; and that those businesses that do need the Council's support have a single point of contact. The support provided to businesses by the Council is facilitated through the new Growth Team approach to client management and is comprised of a number of Council departments which work closely in an effort to present businesses with a seamless support offer through their dedicated Officer. Officers are available to discuss a business's investment plans, carry out site visits and help identify possible funding opportunities. . At the centre of the Invest East Lincolnshire brand is the website www.InvestEastLincolnshire.com, which provides businesses with a wealth of information. In addition to signposting businesses to key services throughout Lincolnshire, the website also contains information about the East Lincolnshire economy, land and offices available in the District Council's ownership and provides potential investors with a snapshot of the district as a place to live, work and visit. Are you entitled to Pension Credit? |
Pension Credit is a non-taxable retirement benefit for people on lower incomes. It is made of two parts: - Guarantee Credit which tops up pensioners' weekly income if it's below (for single people) or £243.25 (for couples)
- Savings Credit which is an extra payment for people who saved some money towards their retirement of up to £13.20 a week (for single people) or £14.90 a week (for couples)
Last year more than £6 billion in Pension Credit was claimed by people on low incomes to help cover their costs of living. But figures released last month reveal that 4 out of 10 pensioners who are entitled are not claiming it. More than £3.3 billion was unclaimed, an average annual amount of £2,000 for each entitled family which does not claim. To be eligible, you or your partner must have reached the qualifying age for state pension. But you can claim Pension Credit regardless of whether you're still working or not. The amount you can get depends on the savings and income you already have. There are additional Pension Credit payments available for people who are disabled or have caring responsibilities. To find out if you are entitled visit the Pension Credit Calculator. The quickest way to apply for Pension Credit is by phone. A friend or family member can call for you but you must be with them when they call. All calls are free of charge. Skegness Foreshore Heritage Listing |
Historic England has added areas of Skegness foreshore, including the Clock Tower and Tower Gardens, to the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens in recognition of their historical significance. The Grade II registration provides added measures of protection to the areas listed and ensures the heritage of the foreshore can be enjoyed for generations to come. The registration specifically references the Clock Tower, with other well-known areas of the foreshore, including sunken gardens, bowling greens and the boating lake also included. Going forward, we will be required to consult The Gardens Trust over any planning applications which may affect the registered sites and the listing will also be used as the basis for relevant conservation policies. The listing from Historic England recognises that the layout and appearance of Skegness is something worth protecting for the future and we will be actively exploring funding opportunities to enhance the newly listed areas and wider foreshore where opportunities allow. Further information can be found herePortfolio Holder for Coastal Regeneration, Councillor Steve Kirk, said: "Skegness is a leading seaside resort and millions of people visit year on year to enjoy a traditional seaside experience. Going forward the resort has its challenges and we must look to extend the season and create more jobs. The listing from Historic England recognises that the layout and appearance of Skegness is something worth protecting for the future and the Council will be actively exploring funding opportunities to enhance the newly listed areas and wider foreshore where opportunities allow. We must continue to be ambitious for Skegness and very much look forward to working with Historic England to ensure this listing is positive for the town".

This year has seen this Council have to make many difficult decisions. Local Government funding has continued to be a challenge and we have had to make changes to the way we deliver services. There have been many discussions about how councils should operate and indeed whether they should even exist. The Devolution and Unitary debates may still be voiced but it is important to understand what we do well and how we can do even better. When I first became a District Councillor in 2007 I was amazed at the breadth of services our District Council provides. Services ranging from food hygiene in restaurants to managing contaminated land and looking after the wellbeing of some of our most vulnerable residents. This is on top of the services our residents will generally expect us to deliver and all in one of the largest districts in the country…that is challenging in itself. Now, as Leader of East Lindsey District Council, it is evident that the best way forward is to work cooperatively with our neighbouring councils and partners. As an Administration, we have prioritised looking after our most vulnerable residents and seeking to grow the economy of the district. Both these endeavours are best achieved by collaborative working. Our excellent Wellbeing Service succeeds because we work with Lincolnshire County Council and our district partners. Our economic ambitions are being progressed by our excellent Tourism team working with West Lindsey District Council, the recently formed Coastal Business Improvement District, and Visit Lincoln, to promote the Lincolnshire Wolds and coast as great places to visit and do business. We continue to see significant growth in the visitor economy and other key business sectors, such as manufacturing and agri-food, are performing exceptionally well. Collaborative working extends to protecting our residents too, from threats anticipated and unknown. This last year has seen the Lincolnshire Resilience Forum manage two major public safety threats in East Lindsey, namely the coastal flood surge in January and the discovery of a cache of Mustard Gas in Woodhall Spa. The Forum brings together all of our emergency services, councils and government agencies to coordinate effective responses to such emergencies. Their work is recognised nationally and as Ward Councillor for Woodhall Spa I am very grateful for their efforts. I am also extremely grateful to all our residents who contribute to the rich tapestry that is East Lindsey. I am very thankful to all our officers who have met the challenges of this last year and I would like to wish all of our residents a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. Last, but not least, please do take time to spare a thought for those who might find this time of year lonely or difficult.

East Lindsey's bathing waters among cleanest in country |
Bathing waters along the East Lindsey coast continue to be among the very best in England, Environment Agency statistics show.
All seven official swimming spots in the District achieved the highest rating of 'excellent', meaning they offer some of the cleanest and safest waters in the country, as well as in Europe. Skegness, Ingoldmells South, Chapel St Leonards, Anderby, Moggs Eye, Mablethorpe Town and Sutton-on-Sea all achieved the highest grade of 'excellent'.
The high standards were matched across the country, with 92% of England's 413 bathing waters achieving 'good' or 'excellent', and 98.3% meeting the tough standards required to reach at least 'sufficient' status.
The Environment Agency monitors water quality throughout the summer to ensure people can make informed choices about when and where to bathe. Water quality results are classified as 'excellent', 'good', 'sufficient' or 'poor'.
The classifications are based on the level of bacteria in the water as monitored by the Environment Agency between May and September. Up to four years of results are combined to let people know how clean the water is over that time.
Visitors to beaches and local communities are urged to clear up and not leave mess on the beach. Every business and household can ensure they don't contribute to pollution on beaches by not pouring fats down drains and not flushing wet wipes. |

Make saving on your fuel bills your New Year resolution |
Christmas can be an expensive time of year... and when it's cold and the family is all at home for the holidays and the heating is on for days on end the fuel bills can soon rack up. So make it your early New Year resolution to think about what you might be able to do to save on your fuel costs in 2018. One way might be to investigate switching electricity and gas providers. Check out the Lincolnshire Energy Switch scheme - you could save a substantial amount. Registration opens December 5 but does not commit you to anything. The last day to register is Monday, February 12. An auction for energy providers to put in their best bids for your business will take place on February 13 and beginning on February 26 you will then find out whether or not you can make savings by switching. You still will not have committed to anything. You then have until March 27 to decide whether you want to switch. Anyone can register, whether residents own their home or rent it at www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/switchAll you need is your annual gas or electric statement or bills covering the last 12 months to hand. The scheme is organised by Boston Borough Council, South Kesteven District Council, City of Lincoln Council, East Lindsey District Council, Lincolnshire County Council, North Kesteven District Council and West Lindsey District Council and is administered by the UK's leading collective switching expert, iChoosr Ltd. If residents are not able to register online, a friend or family members can do this on their behalf, or, they can register offline at their local council or by calling 0800 048 8439. Lincolnshire Energy Switch scheme is open to all energy users, whether they are on dual fuel, electric only, pay monthly or quarterly or have a prepayment meter. |
