Now is the ideal time to take stock of governance, take time to reflect on what has worked well, and where you might need to make some readjustments.

Our team of experienced governance professionals would be very pleased to work with you to review your governance arrangements, provide assurance as appropriate, and also offer suggestions and ideas for any areas for improvement.

Reading Fluency Interventions Project

In partnership with Herts for Learning.

Schools can opt for any of the three year group programmes (Y6, Y7/8 or Y2/3).  The intervention is an evidence-based, teacher led, 8 week group intervention. Impact is achieved in both fluency and comprehension. Evidence from HfL has shown consistently impressive outcomes (in Y6 average improvement of 7months+).  Similar progress has been replicated in other year groups.

The training will be delivered by HfL experts alongside the Babcock English team.  In addition to equipping teachers to deliver a structured intervention, teachers will also be able to explore wider uses of the strategies learnt.

£175 + VAT for Devon maintained schools
£650 + VAT for all other schools

Phonics Autumn 2021 Collection DfE update just released

The DfE have published guidance on administering the phonics screening check to year 2 pupils in the 2021 autumn term.

Cancellation of the phonics screening check in June 2021 means incoming year 2 pupils did not take the check in year 1. In the 2021 to 2022 academic year, it is statutory for schools to administer a past version of the phonics screening check to year 2 pupils during the second half of the 2021 autumn term and return results to their local authority.

Devon and Torbay Music Education Hubs Update

Music Education Grant (MEG) funding for schools 2021-22

As part of our core offer, ALL local authority maintained schools and academies in Torbay and Devon can apply for delegated Music Education Grant (MEG) funding. In 2021-22, eligible schools will receive £400, which is intended to support delivery of the National Plan for Music Education, particularly Whole Class Ensemble Tuition (WCET).

In order to qualify for Music Education Grant (MEG) funding, your school will need to…
  • Use our Schools Music Education Plan (SMEP) self-evaluation tool to make a judgement based on current provision and share this with the Hub.
  • Complete the Music Education Grant (MEG) funding online application form, which includes a basic data submission for each school – we have worked very hard to ensure that this is not an onerous process.
All schools that complete the online application for Music Education Grant (MEG) funding by 5pm on Tuesday 27 July 2021 are in with a chance of winning an additional £1,000 towards music education provision over the year ahead!

Inspection Data Summary Report Update

The Data and assessment Team received a communication on the 7 June 2021 informing schools that the Schools Pre-Inspection Data & Insight Team have updated the inspection data summary report (IDSR) with absence data from autumn term 2020, based on the DfE published data. The absence data used in the IDSR is based on the DfE census collection and has been provided as a new section within the IDSR. This is different to the daily attendance collection which schools have submitted throughout the pandemic, which will not be used in the IDSR.

This data relates to absences during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As such, users should not directly compare 2020 autumn absence to historic absence rates. There may be a number of reasons for changes in absence rates. Inspectors will not use the 2020 autumn absence data by itself to draw conclusions but may use it to prompt questions regarding how well attended a school was during this period. Inspectors may also use previous years' data to provide context to the latest data, particularly where a school has previously had high or low absence rates in relation to other schools.

It is important to note that:

If a pupil tested positive for COVID-19 then this absence should have been treated as an illness and included within the data.
However other COVID-19 related absence, such as pupils being sent home to isolate, did not count as absences within the data.

Further detail on how absence rates have been calculated can be found in the DfE published methodology.

Please ensure you download the latest version of your IDSR, which will have 7 June 2021 release date.

Should you have any IDSR or Ofsted IDSR service queries, please contact either:
